My first marathon!

Well, on Sunday I ran my first marathon in Chicago. I am officially hooked! I did not beat oprah's time, unfortunately, but I finished (5:31:31). I guess that is as good a goal as any. I looked at my race photos and look a little pudgy still. My goal for the next marathon, May 1st, is to lose 15 pounds by then. Hopefully I will shave some time off my miles and run a faster marathon. I know it has to do with my weight, 15 pounds, although it doesn't seem like much, will make all the difference! So after all the indulging after the marathon, I am back on track today and feel great. Who knows, maybe I'll get back into the gym for spin tonight, haven't gone since June, I've done nothing but run for the past 4 months!

Congratulations to you :drinker: That's a major accomplishment. I have my first one scheduled for May 2 next year. Stick to your training and you will cut time off, no worries at all.

I can't exactly relate...... maybe will do one someday???  :blushing:0 -
I certainly went numb, both my mind and body. It's the strangest, most amazing feeling! I went to a quiet place in Grant Park (chicago) and bawled for a good 5 minutes. I can't wait until I try again-Illinois Marathon 2010 May 1! I hope to be 15 pounds lighter and shave off some serious minutes from my time! Thanks for all the well wishes, I began mfp about a year and a half to go and just like my marathon time, this has been a slow and steady race. I am not going to focus so much now on a fitness goal, but focus more on a nutrition goal. I somewhat slacked on that part during my training for the marathon. I know that's backwards, but oh well.0

The runner's high! I love it!
Congrats on completely the marathon! That is incredible! :drinker:
How long did you train?
That's my ultimate goal. I have a 5K coming up in November that I'm currently training for. The Maine Marathon (I live in Portland) is next October. I'm hoping to at least be in shape enough to do a half.
Keep up the good work!0 -

I've been focusing on fitness since I signed up for MFP, that was june 2008...I never worked out much until that summer. I completed 3-1/2marathons this year-one in April (Illinois Half), one in May (Chicago Spring Half) and a third in September (Oak Brook Half). I did a bunch of 5, 8, and 10ks mixed in there, I have so many race shirts, I need to do something with them besides having them take up dresser space!
Believe it- the mind is a powerful thing, I know this may be wrong, but I would look at some of the other folks running and think-they don't look in any better shape than I do and they're out here, so why CAN'T I do this! I was shocked at the Chicago Marathon to see so many heavier runners, it was in a word-inspiring!0
