The Skinny

I just finished the book "The Skinny" by Louis J. Aronne, M.D. I am going to try this lifestyle and see how I do with it since nothing else seems to be working for me. It is based on the glycemic index but seems to be a little easier to follow than some of the low G-I lifestyles I have read about. It consists of 2 phases, Phase 1, and then Phase 2 is basically where you incorporate certain foods back into your life in moderation and maintain that lifestyle. The really big down side for me is for Phase 1, which lasts for approximately 3 months (but can be longer depending on how much weight I lose), I can have absolutely NO bread, white potatoes or (gasp) candy, sweets, that kind of thing  . I think if I may die without my white potatoes and candy, but I'm gonna give it a shot. Wish me luck!!

I am wishing you well in this endeavor. I've never heard of this lifestyle, but I can tell you that I actually did this very thing when I began back in June. I gave up potatoes and all bread - even whole wheat, and zero processed sugar. It took a couple of weeks, but after that I didn't even crave it any more.
I have just recently in September allowed myself the occasional whole grain bread, or dark chocolate but only on rare occasions.
This certainly did work for me! I am hoping that you have an even greater success with this way of life!0 -
You GO Go Girl!!!! :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:
Good for you making the choice to do this!
No bread, potatoes, pasta?, candy......... all the FUN stuff! :grumble:
Actually, my most successful times losing weight excludes these things.
You actually get past the cravings and start feeling GOOD baby! :drinker:
Don't try and explain too much to others who question this...... just do it! uh-huh! :bigsmile:0 -
Thanks for the encouragement! One good thing is I AM allowed 1/2 c of whole wheat pasta as my starch side dish for dinner if I choose, so I don't have to cut the pasta out all together. I'm glad to hear that the sweet cravings are likely to subside after a few weeks. I have been unable to envision my life without Sour Patch Kids thus far! (ha).
I definitely don't plan on trying to explain my reasoning for doing this to the questioners and nay sayers. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and everyone out there has something in particular that works for them - I'm hoping this will be what works for me! :bigsmile:0 -
Good luck with this! I can't do it and honestly wouldn't want to. I don't believe in torturing yourself in the name of dietsake. Life is too short to go without bread and sweets. I have them often and have still lost 32 pounds since May. I have a small stomach and waistline with curvy hips and I don't think that having these foods in my life has done anything except enhance it!0

Fortunately I think once I get past the initial sugar cravings this won't be torture for me. The torture is fighting the cravings. They consume me. Diabetes is rampant in my family. I watched it steal my grandmother's eyesight and any quality of life she enjoyed, and eventually, it stole her life. If I don't cut out the candy and the insane amount of carbs I consume, I fear it will lead me down the same path.0

CONGRATULATIONS on your new endeavor.
Everyone has a different body. For me, when I eat the starches and sweets, I end up feeling bloated and tired, so I try and cut them out, but fall back unless I have a specific diet plan to follow.
You'll do great. Get as much support as you can and that will help. Are you allowed to have fruit? Sometimes that can help with the sweet cravings? What about sugar free things? And alcohol? Is that a no-no too? That's where I draw the line:grumble: Just kidding.
Do great and keep us posted.0 -
Thanks lula - I feel the EXACT same way with sugar and carbs - tired and bloated. I'm not much of a drinker anymore so alcohol won't be a problem for me. I don't have a good relationship with alcohol - it makes me want to remove clothing. That is generally not a good thing when you are in public with your husband.0

Well good luck with it and I am sure you will do great! :flowerforyou:0
