How to strengthen my core?

What are good exercises to strengthen your core? Many lifetimes ago, I could bench 8 plates, do sets of 20+ pull ups, do combatives training for hours, and walk through walls. But now I'm old and a total slob trying to get back in shape. And I'm pulling core muscles I never knew I had left and right.

Clearly I can't just jump back into full speed mode. Baby steps.

I'm looking for advice on a continuum of core exercises (to strengthen my body from the inside out) starting with the basic and then moving into intermediate.

Advice is appreciated.

Planks. Lots of them. Any variations you come across.
    Bridges.
Leg scissors, with lengthy hold times.
    Supermans.

If you want detailed stuff just check out youtube for vids of the exercises.

    Pushups & planks & rowing.

I do kayaking, it's great I get scenery, plus a little weight lifting carrying the kayak c. 50 yards to the lake and back.

Swimming, plus anything else mentioned by others that requires you to basically work your whole body.
  • Much thanks, people. Surprised by the number of times people said "planking," but it makes perfect sense. Toes and bo's.
