High fibre - for kids

My son has major issues with constipation, and the dr has suggested that he have 1 glass of apple juice a day and some kind of high fibre breakfast bar or some other kind of high fibre food that he likes.
So what are some foods high in fibre that your kids like?
He's 2.5, he'll eat apples, yogurt and apple sauce for fruits, no veggies, no meat. he's super super picky, i never know what the heck to feed him lol!

Cereal? My almost 3 y.o. daughter likes just about any cereal but she loves multigrain cheerios. I'm not sure it counts as high in fiber though.0
-
the only cereal i can get him to eat is fruit loops, lol!
i looked up fiber one bars, and i think i'm going to try oats & chocolate, and oats & apple streusel...those are the 2 that look like he might eat.
i've never tried them before though, are they good?! the chocolate mocha looks good!!0 -
i love fibre one bars they are yummy!!!0

Hi Tara! My son is very picky as well. I make him keep trying foods, at least one bite, and he has changed his mind about A LOT of foods that he always said he didn't like. Whenever I gave him something he didn't want he'd say "I'm allergic" lol..as if I wouldn't know if he really was?! Kids are soo funny.
Anyway! You could buy him the Yoplait Fiber One yogurt, as normally yogurt has no fiber. These are low cal, non fat so they are good snacks for them. Each serving has 5 grams of fiber in it and they are 4oz, so definitely child friendly. Apple sauce is a good one, I always make sure and buy the "Natural" or "Unsweetened" and it's just as yummy! If he likes oatmeal, you can buy him Quaker Instant Oatmeal they now have a higher fiber kind with 12 grams of fiber per serving in cinnamon or maple and brown sugar. Also raspberries have a lot of fiber and so do pears, even more than apples if he likes those things. If he's old enough popcorn even has almost as much fiber as an apple and about the same amount of a banana. Avocados have LOTS of fiber and are virtually tasteless if you could somehow sneak this into sandwiches that he eats. If he'll eat beans, like black beans or kidney beans those also have lots of fiber. Now, they even make Fiber One poptarts! Fiber One has put out lots of different foods with added fiber and they still taste just as good, there are lots of ideas out there that he'll probably like!0 -
The fiber one bars are great! Both of kids love the oats and chocolate they call it a "chocolate" bar. I was so happy that they liked them. I have tried them myself and like them. So good luck! I hope he/she likes them.0
-
you need to nip his picky eating in the butt now you are in control (as the parent) not him- He needs some vegetables- Apple Juice doesn't work as good on constipation as people think- Give him prune juice miralax have him drink more water and he needs to eat vegetables especially the green ones.0

Fiber one bars are glorified sugar and just give gas they don't have good fiber in them and have alot of sugar0 -
activia yogurt is good so I here. Alot of people tell me to try it because I suffer from constipation very badly-0

The oats and chocolate are great. Taste just like chewy chocolate chip granola bars. The Hannaford (local supermarket) ones are only a couple bucks a box and have 9 grams of fiber. I eat one for breakfast almost every day.
Just make sure he drinks enough water. Without enough water, fiber has the opposite of the desired effect!!0 -
Regarding Fiber one bars
The Nutrition
The nutritional information was pretty much what I expected – 140 calories, 9 grams of fiber, but it also has 10 grams of sugar. I guess I should have been expecting that, given how sweet it was. But then I read the ingredient list – these bars contain high fructose corn syrup, as well as hydrogenated coconut oil!
What's healthy about that?
I see this bar as nothing but a glorified candy bar.
From Fitnessmantra.com
Eat the bars as a rare treat but don’t you, for even one minute, believe you can justify having these everyday as a “fiber food” - probably “candy bar” is a better term for them. Instead try yogurt topped with flaxseed or the whole grain sandwich - they are both satisfying and give you the fiber you need - naturally!

Granola, raisins, prunes or prune juice?0
-
he won't drink prune juice, he does eat raisins though and they used to work wonders but not so much anymore.
also, with the nipping the picky eating i've tried. i'll put what i make in front of him and tell him he has to eat it or he gets nothing and doesn't get bedtime snack. and he won't eat it, so i'll give it for snack and he still won't eat it. he's gone to bed without eating anything and woken up at 3am screaming and holding his tummy and still then wouldn't eat it. so i'd rather let him eat something he likes then starve him ya know.0 -
has anyone tried Kellogg's Fiber Plus bars?
They're have less cals, carbs and sodium then fiber 1 bars, they have the same amount of fiber and protein, but less sugar. they also have more vitamins and stuff in them0 -

I understand what your saying but you don't want him having bad eating habits later in life and that starts at childhood- when they are kids thats when you can incorporate good eating habits so they aren't struggling with weight issues later in life.It can be simple changes pb and j on wheat bread, grapes, carrots, celery, tomatoes, broccoli and dressing- I have 2 kids myself and always have them try new things and they are stubborn but you don't know you don't like something until you try it more than once. I do that as well I would never try different things as a kid but when I had my kids I wanted it to be different. I am still trying new things now and even if I don't like it at first I still try it again0 -
i try to sneak healthy stuff in there, he gets his fruits with apples, frozen blueberries, yogurt (i can cut up other fruits like bananas, melon ect really small and mix it with his yogurt) we only eat brown bread/rice/pasta ect. he'll drink veggie juices so i buy the juice that has 2 full servings of veggies ect. i always make sure to offer him whatever we're eating and i try to get him to take a bite of something before he says uck, but its hard to make him ya know.
i was never really a picky eater, didn't eat meat, mashed potatoes or mushrooms anything else i'll at least try. i'm hoping that now that he's finally starting to talk more i can kind of reason with him....i have a 16 month old as well and she'll eat any and everything i give her except mushrooms, i love feeding her lol0 -
Also, since he doesn't eat much, remember to give him a children's multi vitamin!0
-
as soon as my kids stopped taking formula i started giving them the liquid vitamins in with their milk in the morning. and now that their older they get a flinstones gummy every morning!0
-
know that your son is very young but do you ever get him to help you prepare and cook the food.
Most children are more likely to try foods if they have made them theirselves even if its just a sandwich. Doesn't work with all kids but may make him more interested in trying new things.
Good luck. :flowerforyou:0 -

Ouch, a bit harsh I say.
Apple juice does work well in kids unlike adults.
How about raisins? Or grapes?0 -

Don't mean to be harsh I am just a straight shooter.
If you do apple juice half it up with water so 4oz of juice and 4oz of water and that it is 100% APPLE juice no sugar added.0 -
My son eats prunes and loves them. I tell him it's to make his tummy feel better, and he knows it helps. Oatmeal is also great - try stirring in a couple of tablespoons of canned pumpkin, it will add yummy flavor AND more fiber. I also make fruit smoothies: 1 cup frozen fruit (no sugar added), 1/2 cup fat free/low sugar yogurt (I use Stoneyfield Farms Organic Fat Free French Vanilla), a little water to thin, and a tablespoon of wheat germ (lots of fiber, adds a very mild nutty flavor, look for it on the cereal isle or at a health food store in the bulk section). Serve in a cool kiddy glass with a bendy straw and call it a milkshake! I've also found that cherry juice works well (I only get 100% fruit juice). I also only use 100% whole wheat pasta and brown rice for meals. Also, any other fresh fruit like berries, grapes, cherries. Even baby corn out of the can - super easy for kids to eat, and kinda fun too. Try it dipped in cottage cheese (altough dairy can contribute to constipation) or humus (which is made of beans and high in fiber too). You could also stir in vegetable/fruit baby food (like prunes, banana, etc.) into stuff that he will eat. Try and cut out as many processed foods as you can - and as others have said, LOTS of water. Good luck!0

he helps with just about everything, cooking, cleaning ect. when its time to eat i let him pour his and his sisters drink, he helps with sandwiches, pouring other things, measuring, pretty much anything that doesn't involve using a sharp knife or touching raw meat. he helps with the dishes, vacuums, washes walls, lol! he's my little shadow!
he eats raisins a lot, he loves them! and i do 100% apple juice but i don't mix it with water. the pharmacist told me not to dilute it. i do dilute other juice though, and my daughter always gets half juice half water.
he drinks a ton of water. he gets a cup of milk with breakfast and dinner, a cup of juice with lunch and has unlimited water throughout the day. just looking around my living room and kitchen theres 4 cups of water lying around. and many times through the day i collect all the cups and refill them with cold water.
he eats the instant oatmeal and loves it, i'll have to try the canned pumpkin. he hates pumpkin pie though so i don't know if that'll work. i love the 'milkshake' idea, i'm going to have to try that! or maybe even just adding wheat germ into his yogurt or something!! he won't touch any cherries, grapes ect...only apples and frozen blueberries lol! he won't touch corn either, i've even tried letting him dip veggies in cheese, or melting cheese over them with no luck.
thanks for these ideas!!0 -

don't feel bad about about corn it has no nutritional value and is loaded with starch. What about green veggies and sweet potatoes?0 -

Do you have kids? You don't act like you do. You can't just force feed a child, it doesn't work. Yes, you need to be in charge with your child, but forcing him to eat things he doesn't like isn't the way to go. Haven't you ever heard the horror stories about children who were forced to eat foods they didn't like as a child, and then would never touch them again even in to their adult life? That's not just folk lore. You can scar a child pretty easily.

i've tried most veggies i can think of and he won't touch them.0 -
Ground flax seed mixed into yogurt is an excellent source of fiber that I think you could get a little kid to eat.0
-
ugh, i've tried putting ground flax seed into yogurt and couldn't handle it...it was so nasty to me lol! i can't see him trying that0

My daughter has problems with constipation and has as long as I can remember. She is also very picky. For a long time the closest thing fruit that she would eat was applsauce. When we changed pediatricians, the new doc said NO APPLSAUCE! Tha amount of sugar in it and the fact that is has been processed removes the original nutritional value and actually is MORE constipating than it is any help.
As far as the picky eating, its a tough subject. The best thing to do is let them be a part of meal planning, shopping, and preparation. Sounds like he is. It won't hurt them to go without a meal or two, but if they consistantly refuse to eat get a prof opinion. Just don't give in to what he wants. Let him know in advance that this is what there is, the choice is yours. If you aren't comfortable letting him go to bed hungry, like I wasn't then make sure you choose the other food that he has so that it is still healthy and you are still in control, but let him think he is in control. Like say if you don't eat dinner you can have a pb &j, but it will be on whole grain bread, natural pb and low sugar jelly. (if hes hesitant to the ww bread, put one slice on the bottom and a regular slice on top till he gets used to it.) I did that with my daughter, and she got so tired of pb &j, that she eats what is offered or waits till breakfast and pb &j is no longer her fave, lol!
I also used Benefiber for kids. It dissolves in liqid and you can put it in yogurt or pudding too. She never knew it was in there but when she found out why she was feeling so much better, she would ask for it and she learned not to be so picky and try new foods. The pediatrician made her promise that she would try one new fruit or veggie every week. If she didn't like it she could wait a few weeks and try it one more time, if she still didn't like it then fine. I took her to the market every week and let her pick whatever she wanted! It worked wonders!!!! Shes 9 now, still pretty picky, but it has gotten easier. It will for you too, just stick to your guns girl!0 -

Yes I do I have an 8 year old and a 5 year old. I didn't say force him I said that she is the parent not him a soon to be 3 year old only knows what they are taught and what they see if mommy and daddy don't do it why should they- You have to lead by example.
I wouldn't post on this thread if I didn't have children. I am surrounded by children- And yes if my kids don't like something they still need to try it more than once. But my kids aren't the issue because they eat veggies and fruits0 -

I realize i'm the parent, and I do lead by example. I eat a lot of fruits and veggies and so does their dad, and his little sister. So its not a lead by example kind of thing. He sees me eating, but still won't try it. Every day i have 1/2 pepper and 3/4 cup carrots and he sits beside me and watches me eat them but won't touch it. I don't eat meat, and my son doesn't like meat so that i don't try to push for, but i try to get him to eat beans ect but he wont' do that either.0
