Overweight to obese has become the "new normal" in this country, along with the fact that people in general are larger, even if they are not overweight. In such a social climate, someone who merely gets down to what would be a normal(not too skinny, not too fat)weight for their particular body is seen as "skinny", or worse yet, people accuse one of having an eating disorder these days. I've been the recipent of being called "skinny" myself. I'm just under 5'5" at 118 with a very petite bone structure(not Asian)and I don't consider myself "skinny" at all. In fact, I feel best and look great at least 6 pounds(preferably 8) lighter. When I'm down that low, any extra on the tummy is gone, the hallmark of whether one is lean or not. But I know it's different for everyone, factoring in size of bones, general body type, and other things.

The top end of my ideal weight band is 147lbs, I will be happy somewhere between 154 and 161.

The ideal weight for my height is quite a varied number, I've chosen the higher end because I'm "big boned" and I plan to be muscular by then ;-)

I have in the past got down to an ideal weight and people have said I look ill but I think I look lean and feel alot better, I would like to get there again as I don't really care what they say as it is my body and IF and only IF my doctor says I need to increase my weight then I will, till then ill keep doing what I am.

^^^THIS^^^^ it's my body and it's up to me and only me what weight i feel comfortable at, unless i am damaging my health and then that would be a different story!!
  • I'm 5'1, and according to the height/weight chart, my ideal weight is anywhere between 115-129. Anything lower than 125 though and I start to look kinda gross.

My goal weight for years has always been 102, but I finally came to the conclusion that that is entirely too low, and dangerous for my frame. So I decided on 120-125 for now. Seems a little healthier.

I think it depends on your frame and your genes. My mom is 5'1, and when she got down to 115 pounds after gastric bypass surgery (she used to weigh 270), she looked horrible.
I'm 4'11, 122 pounds. My goal, for now, is 120 pounds. All I can say is be in the healthy weight range according to your frame and height, whether it's at the low end or high end. Whatever weight you feel comfortable at, as long as it's healthy, is fine.

My healthy weight range is 112lbs - 140lbs and im 5ft3. Im currently 144lbs and don't consider myself to look over weight what so ever even though i am technically classed as 4lbs over weight.
My lowest weight was 124lbs and it's funny cause thats slap bang in the middle of my healthy weight range but all my friends and family kept lecturing me saying i looked too thin and need to put weight on ect, my family especially said i look ill, even my sister said i looked anorexic....whattt!!! I know 124lbs for someone of 5ft3 might sound like you wouldnt look too think but i have big boobs to account for, they must weight quite a bit ha,

I know what you mean. According to my height, (5 ft) weight calculators say my ideal height is 106. Well, let me say that the lowest I've ever been since high school was 108, and I looked SKELETAL. No boobs, scrawny arms, protruding hip bones and everything. I weigh 124 right now, and I think if I weighed any less than 115 I would lose all my adult curves and just start looking like an underfed 7th grader. So you should never go 100% off what those things say.

Exact same thing happened to my mom. My ideal weight for my height ranges anywhere from 90-123 pounds. I think I would look horrid if I weighed 90 pounds.

It really depends on the person's body type, that is why the range is so large. I am on the low end of the "ideal" weight chart and it's a result of my natural lifestyle of loving to be active, dancing, eating healthy foods. Even when I was 9 months pregnant I was still at the high end of the "ideal" weight chart and I was very healthy (with a 7.5 pound baby). So, it all depends on where you fall in terms of many personal body type factors. Even when I was not exercising a lot (but still an active person) and was eating lots of treats I still only weighed 110 max (I'm petite). And people still tell me I have a curvy figure because my hips/butt are exactly ten inches bigger than my waist.

When I started at 255 pounds my goal weight was 200 pounds, I am 5'9. Now I have hit 170-ish, a weight I haven't seen since before the 10th grade. It's pretty amazing how what you think is your goal weight may not be where you settle. Some say I am too skinny but I think their mental image of healthy has gotten fatter over the years. I always thought that the generic BMI calculator on here was retarded and completely in left field on it's healthy range for me. Actually, finally there so maybe my mind didn't have it right either. I don't know what my current weight makes me look like to others but I know I like it and I feel great. Everyone is different, I am sure you have heard that plenty of times. Just slowly lose and find a weight that is easy to maintain, no matter where that falls on your ideal scale.
So this has nothing to do with the thread, but wanted to let "runfatmanrun" know that my name on mapmyrun.com is runbrun...as in "run, *****, run!" Haha...

My ideal weight is 127.1 lbs based on my build and age; I think I look healthy @ 135 - 140. For me it’s all about being healthy. Paying attention to my BMI, fat and water percentage keeps me on course.

My idea weight was said to be 122. I started about about 190 in January 2011 and dropped to 122 by december 2012. Iooked gross. You could see my ribs and my hips were what my hubby called pokey, I had not breasts and I did not like the way I looked. So I know it might sound crazy but I loved my body at 133, it was still in the normal range of healthy and I had some of m curves. I got sidetracked by deaths in my family and gained back 25 pounds and I am currently 18 from my goal of 133.:) I may go to 130 so I can have some wiggle room!:)

Hey, I'm not saying BMI is a great measurement of ideal body weight. But I certainly agree that people are now more overweight and there is social pressure to join them in this new normal.

After losing around 45-50 pounds, I'm right in the middle regarding BMI: 6'2", 185 lbs. I like how I look at this weight, and I like even more how I feel. But all of my friends (most of whom are overweight, but not unreasonably so) are needling me about being so "skinny," even asking about my health.

My husband has never been overweight, he has weighed, at most, 145lbs in the 9 years we've been together (he is 28, 5'7) but he has weighed as little as 122lbs and the amount of commentary that comes with him being at 122lbs was beyond offensive. He's a runner and a fast one at that and during his "race season" his weight is significantly lower. When people say he's too skinny or question his health, he's not actually sick, he's exceptionally healthy - capable of running 80 miles a week and consuming a minimum of 3,000 calories a day, sometimes well over 5,000. But if they can't discourage his fitness by questioning his physique, they question the damage he's doing to his knees or how much time his running takes away from his job, school or our relationship. It annoys me, his "curvy" wife, because I do not begrudge this runner man's fitness, but a lot of people seem to be extremely intolerant of his physical abilities.

I'm 5'3" and apparently my ideal weight is 122 lbs. I do have a small frame but also big boobs, so I'm thinking that my ideal is probably more like 124-127 lbs. At 139lbs., I'm now in the 'healthy' weight range for my height and age, so I'm going to take it 5lbs. at a time and see what really is ideal for me.

My 2 cents. I am 5 pounds above the HIGH end of my HEALTHY weight.

I have been heavy for so long that everyone, friends and family, got use to seeing me a certain way. ALL of them think I look WAY to thin.

Funny thing is. People and total strangers that I have come to know, think nothing of the way I look and never ask if I am too thin. And alot of times, my friends will poke fun at me in front of strangers and new friends about my weight loss and the strangers and new friends will say that I look perfectly normal.

I never thought I could even get close to the high end of my HEALTHY range. Now that I am right there, I could see getting down towards the middle of that range.

EDIT: Alot of my friends ask if I am sick as well.

I just checked that Halls MD website that someone else posted here. Says my ideal weight range is between 113 and 149. As I mentioned in another reply on this thread, I'm currently 118 and would prefer to be lower than 113, a bit. But I'd be thrilled with even getting to 113 and being healthy. No way do I want to creep anywhere near up to the upper range. A very long time ago, I did get up to just under 130, and on me, frankly, that was pretty chubby with my bone structure and all. But everyone is different for sure!
  • You're not the only one. I had a patient ask someone in the office last week if I was sick because I looked - according to them - too thin. I took it as an oddly sick compliment.

I'm shooting for optimum health (10-12% body fat). I don't care what people think about how that looks.
