Dropping weight quickly and catching?

I was wondering whether anyone's tried this and whether it's effective and safe.
I saw someone benching and they would allow gravity to completely take the weight down very quickly, they would "catch it", push it up at a normal speed and repeat. It seemed that the hardest part of the workout was catching the weight at the bottom.

I have not heard of that. I would recommend researching this so you do not hurt yourself long term by attempting it.
