Hey Guys,
I just signed up
I'm a little confused by the "reccomended calories" since I'm an athlete and not a normal person I guess. A little about myself:
I'm 5'9.5-5'10 145lbs and trying to drop the last 10 pounds. I run 50min (7 miles) everyday and walk everywhere since I'm a student. I look good but not good enough for me which is why I'm here. I'm trying to get down to 135, my old weight from freshman year.
The reccomended calories for me is 1500 which seems WAY too low, but i could be wrong. Which is why I need opinions
In the past I've maintained on 2300 a day, sitting around doing nothing, now that I've added so much exercise to my life I typically need 2800-3000 to maintain and I feel like I'll faint on 1500. Is there someplace in the middle I can meet to meet my goals or should I trust mfp? Oh and I probably already said this but I run 7 miles everyday. My goal is to lose 1 lb per week! Thanks

Do you eat back your exercise calories? You know you can...right?0

I really like this calculator: http://scoobysworkshop.com/calorie-calculator/
MFP is calculating it based on how much weight/week you want to lose... change it to 0.5/week and usually the amt goes up. I don't use the MFP calculations though myself... even if I am "normal"0 -
Check out scoobysworkshop.com. It will tell you what how many calories you should consume. I personally think its a bit more accurate than MFP regarding that.0

Yes that definitely seems too low!! If you're eating between 2800-3000 to maintain you might want to just lower your intake from that....example 2500. But I do have to say you are not over weight!! And if you're are looking to change to look of your body, you might want to go more towards strength training for body recomposition and ease up on the cardio a bit.0 -
I would start off with higher calories than lower down as needed, going to low to begin with could be bad.
However 1500 + eating your calories back might be right. Do you have a HRM or know how many calories you burn running?0 -
How many calories a week did you say that you would burn through exercise? If you said none, then you need to add what you do onto the exercise tab each day. Those calories are then available for you to eat.0

MFP calculates based on you doing nothing all day. So, if you sit around all day, you'll need to eat 1500 to meet your weight loss goals.
If you run, log that, and suddenly MFP will say you can eat more.
Ta da! :-D0 -
If you put in your exercise miles you will have many, many more calories than that. Eat them.0

I don't suppose you would be willing to post a pic would you? I am 5' 9.5" and I am trying to figure out what my goal weight should be. See my other post for more info:

I ran your info into scoobysworkshop.com with 5-6 hrs a week of strenuous exercise and it says your BMR is 1516 and your TDEE is 2615 (for maint) and that to lose 1 lb a week you should consume 1961 calories and not eat back your exercise calories. If you were to eat at the 1500 calories that MFP set for you, you would most def need to eat your exercise calories back.0

MFP makes ESTIMATES.
if you already know what your maintenance calories are.. then you are way ahead of the game, and can set it yourself.
3500 calories = 1 lb.
so if you want to lose 1lb a week, then 3500/7 = 500.... thats 500 less a day.
if you currently need 2800-3000 to maintain, then consume between 2300 to 2500. It is really that simple.
adjust the numbers as needed... but thats the idea.
really, people shouldnt be relying solely on what MFP calculator says.. its just a good starting point for people that dont have the education yet on what they need...0 -
thanks so much guys!! I didnt know it was not including exercise. I will probably eat 2200 and lower it from there since that seems more doable. And thanks to the person who said I'm not overweight haha Yes *sigh* i know I'm not but I feel I could still look better. right now I'm a size 4 and sometimes a size 6 when I used to be a lot smaller. I know if I lose too much I'll be too skinny which is why I only wanna lose 10 pounds (to tone up). I would post a picture but I'm weird about my face being on the internet. My body is very similar to this though: http://www.mybodygallery.com/photos-1981-body-shape.htm#img and i think anything from 135-150 is good for 5'9 if you are built different you could even be 160 and still look really good. I just have a small ish frame.0

I run 50min (7 miles) everyday
You run 8.4MPH for 50 minutes everyday? Wow.0 -

Either eat back all cals or just cut from TDEE by about 15-20%.
You could also look into Lyles Stubborn Fat Solution.
Since you like running, he has several different types of HIIT and a specific type of diet for getting rid of the last few pounds.
Only recommended if you are below 15% BF though.0
