Weight gain from an injury??

Background: I was physically hit by a car yesterday (not going fast - in parking lot). I did go to the hospital, and I have a contusion under my knee cap which will take I don't know how long to heal. So once again (after nursing a hamstring injury from 2 months ago), I am not allowed to workout.
Anyway, do you "gain" weight from an injury? I am not saying I have been perfect all day, but all things considering, I haven't been horrible - the scale continues to rise. Opinions please!!! As of Monday, I was at my highest weight in a very long time, 156.2. I went to the gym consistently Mon thru Wed - well Wed morning I was back down to 153.2 and Thurs was back up to 155.8. I did some weight lifting on Wed which left both my arms and chest sore and still are now. This morning I was back up to 156.2 and tonight (I know it is night time but I step on the scale all day long) it said 158.8.. I am going crazy over this yo-yoing and I can't exercise. HELP!!!!

sorry to say it's not the accident, it the fact that you are eating more calories than your body needs at this moment.
since you cant exercise you are going to need to be 100% on it with your food choices. good luck on your recovery0 -
I broke my wrist about six weeks ago and the shock of it made me stop losing although I didn't gain weight. I think my body went into survival mode and was holding water. I was in a cast for four weeks and three days after I got the cast off I weighed in with a three pound loss.0

OMG are you my twin?! I was hit by a car, both knees, in March, and was out of running for a month. Luckily, I could still do other cardio, but not my normal. I got better, but awhile back started having more issues, so was out of running once more. I was still able to do the elliptical, stationary bike, certain types of walking, and swimming laps. The elliptical and swimming were the best for me...didn't hurt at all!
As far as weight gain goes, it might be the opposite. I had a sprained ankle last summer, was off exercise for two weeks, and lost weight. However, I lowered my calories.
I hope you get better soon! :flowerforyou:0 -
stop weighing yourself!!! eat healthy, do what exercise you can and weigh yourself once a week. I am sorry you are injured (how scary it must have been for you), but you aren't helping yourself by weighing daily... keep your head in the game and away from the scale!0

I am so sorry that happened to you bit thankfully you were not injured more seriously.
I don't think you could have gained weight in one day. You would have to have eaten an extra 3500 calories. Yesterday. Everyone's weight fluctuates day to day. Even throughout the same day. That is why it is best to weigh once a week. Same time, same day, same scale every time.
I am also recovering from an injury & cannot workout. I can swim, take walks on flat surfaces & am doing some yoga.
What I have done is gone back & reset my calorie limit to maintenance & changed my activity level to sedentary. I want to concentrate on healing & not stress about losing weight right now. It's frustrating because I was working so hard & doing great. But I feel right now it is more important to let my injury heal properly.
You could change your activity level to sedentary. That will calculate what you need too lose without exercise.0
