terrible sleeper

ok i've always been a light sleeper, so i found that sleeping with a fan on for some background noise was very helpful. then my boyfriend and i moved in together and he snores - not only does the snoring wake me up and keep me up, but every move he makes wakes me up too!
i've been having trouble falling asleep and staying asleep or falling back to sleep after waking up. even when i wake up @ 5am to go to the gym i still can't fall asleep at night! Is anyone out there a light sleeper? what helps? i want to avoid sleeping pills!!!

im not a light sleeper, but i have a really hard time falling asleep. i can go to bed at 9 and still be awake at 12 trying to fall asleep. and once i get woken up it takes me forever to fall back asleep again.
i've lived with my boyfriend for over 3 years now, and for the last year he's been sleeping on the futon couch. he also snores really loud and makes it even harder for me to fall asleep. and i move around like crazy which ends up keeping him awake. he gets a better sleep on the futon (in the living room) and i get a better sleep if hes out there to so thats where he stays lol!0 -
Ear plugs for you and breath right strips for him.0

my mother's a terrible snorer and when we travel together, I have a terrible time sleeping. I've tried ear plugs, and hate the ones that are squishy and are supposed to expand in your ears since they fall out in the night. When we were traveling in Europe, I found some wax ones which actually confirm to the inside of your ear, creating a real barrier to sound and work fabulously. They are comfortable and block out my mother's loud snores. I've also talked to people with the same issue which use the ear plugs intended for use on planes (plastic with the ridges).
Good luck.0 -
Wow thats really sucks! Ive been there and still working on it, My husband snores sooo loud and grunts and whistles every noise a human could possibly make HE MAKES! F*&^*&^ annoying! I use to stay up forever , it starts taking a toll on you after awhile I get very grumpy Not only with his snoring keeping me awake but with my son getting up throughout the nite climbing in bed also turning, kicking, talking double whammmy, I ended up sleeping on the couch for awhile so i cou;d get something.
I finally had my husband go to the docs for a check up because this was just crazy. snoring all nite then coming home from work falling into the recliner and pretty much passing out 10 kin. later, I was like what the hell this is rediculous, he saw the doctr and he recommended him go to a sleep study and it showed he really didnt get much more than 4 hours of sleep a nite and also waking up frequently, so he does now use a CPAP machine that fits right over his and its not very loud but it pushes air through his nose opening his passages and i must say this has helped tremendously, he is suppose to exercise and loose some weight but dont the majority of us.
So perhaps if hes snoring that bad he might have a problem , my husbands 37 which i wish I would have had him go years ago , this has been an ongoing issue forever and hiurs of lost sleep for him and me0 -

I have found that if I take my calcium, or some sort of alkiline food like celery right before I go to bed, I sleep SSOOOOOO much better then without! Your body may be a little acidic.0 -
Ear plugs..
you might get used to it after a while though. It is a new situation, so once your body and mind get used to it - I am sure you will sleep a lot better. It'll be a little annoying until you do though.0 -
I feel your pain...Breathe right strips have saved me! I make my husband wear them every night. Good luck.0

I just read an article on MSN about foods that help you go to sleep one was cherries also warm milk. Exercising helped me go to sleep, I know they say not to do it but...

i really know what your talking about i cant sleep when my gf moves either or my dog licking herself or anything anyone got adivice for that part not just the snoring cause i need the help too lol and i dont want to sleep without her lol0

Sleeeep, god I miss it! I do what you do, and keep a fan on. If he snores, it may help a little to sleep down at the other end of the bed. Get him some Breathe Right strips, and give that a try. For you, you might want to try Melatonin supplements. They help a lot of people sleep. They have the opposite effect for me, but I'm odd when it comes to supplements.0

EXACTLY the same situation for me! Exactly!0 -
I feel your pain. I'm a very light sleeper and my husband snores and we also sleep with a fan on. I have been taking melatonin to help me sleep. I don't wake up as often and when I do wake up I can fall back to sleep faster. I'm still tired but I can function better. Good Luck:flowerforyou:0

I also have difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. I started taking Melatonin. I was afraid that I would have a drugged sleep, but I was able to wake up in the middle of the night to assist my 2 year old to go to the bathroom, without that drunk or drugged feeling.
I also started taking a vitamin B-complex. This helps manage stress and also helps me calm my head and sleep much better.0 -
well it's good to know i'm not alone! we've been living together for over a year and i'm still not adjusted to the noise. he is actually going for a sleep study - we have been taking turns sleeping on the couch, but it's not as comfy as sleeping in bed and neither of us get a good rest when we sleep on the couch.
i think i'll give the melatonin a shot! i also take vitamin b-complex, but that seems to give me more energy. i tried the squishy ear plugs and they didn't work either - i'm going to look for the wax ones too!
thanks to everyone for your replies!0 -

Same thing here...except it's the hubby (LOL). We cannot sleep together...he snores and I kick and get over heated. He sleeps on the couch and I get the bed. We have only slept in the same bed probably 1 weeks worth of time during our 5 years of marriage.0
