Burn fat or calories?

Hi! I tend to work out first thing in the morning, before I eat anything. Mostly because that's when I'm most motivated & I can get it done right away & focus on my son the rest of the day. I occassionally do a class in the evening, but very rare.
I hear about workouts having differents burns in morning or later in the day after you've consumed calories.
Can anyone fill me in on the facts here?
What is the difference between working out first thing as opposed to later in the day? Is there a difference?

for all intents and purposes, there is no difference. work out when you feel like it.

It won't matter until you get really lean, and in that case it "might" matter. Although most of this is anecdotal, I trust Lyle on this issue:

Essentially, if you're already quite lean AND you have an issue with fatty acid mobilization, fasted cardio may help.

For the vast majority of people it won't matter in the least. Speaking from personal experience I am able to get to right around the 10% bodyfat mark (current pic is in the 12-13% range) without any cardio at all.

Anyways, see the article linked above.

the theory behind fasted cardio is that in the morning your body’s stores of glycogen are depleted. Doing cardio in this state causes your body to mobilize more fat because of the unavailability of glycogen......

However how much difference this actually makes for the average person I'm not really sure, probably not that much.

Just do your cardio whenever it fits into your day.

The difference is negligible. Train whenever you will train at your best, that's the critical component.
