Plateau!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Help me please.

For 3 weeks I haven't updated myfitnesspal but have been committed to my weight loss program.

Gym 4+ a week and eating well but for some reason I have lost no weight, how can this be?

Please help me with any hints and tips to get out of my plateau.

Make sure you are logging! Hidden calories are everywhere and if you don't have a food diary, there is no good way to ensure you are making your goals. Make sure you are eating every one of your regular calories because you may end up putting your body into starvation mode if you don't eat enough. Lastly, take it easy on yourself. You will lose, just stick with it. If you are true to your workout and food plan, the weight will come off.

Assuming you don't have underlying difficulty losing weight I.e. hormone imbalance, pcos, insulin resistance. And assuming you are not pregnant or hosting an alien symbient....

Your leptin levels might be down or your cortisol levels might be up. Have a 'feed day' where you eat to a level of feeling full and without stressing your body with exercise. The following day, have a spectacularly good day (in fact it takes about 6 days for your leptin levels to drop again) and do some exercise. Increasing your leptin levels even with just one meal and controlling cortisol (hoarding hormone) overproduction for just one day can be just the 'jiggle' your metabolism needs. Yes you will go up a bit on the feed day (only a bit) but it will come off and more over the ensuing 6 days and bust your plateau.
  • Thank you for the advise, plateau is very hard but have taken the advise on board and shifted a 1lb. Not much but is heading in the right direction. I just hope I keep it up.

    Thank you

I recommend you google 'insulin resistance quiz' and take a quick anonymous online test. It might not be a plateau. And your profile comments indicate some symptoms of IR. If you score over 10, you might want to get a test done from a doctor.

Some doctors don't see a problem unless it is diabetes which is actually a bit different because the pancreas is overworking in the case of IR. you can test for hyperinsulinemia (too much insulin in the blood). And if you want, hyperlipidemia (too much cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood). your doctor can also look for elevated serum uric acid and ferritin levels, moderately elevated blood pressure, abnormal lipid profile. Your doctor may also perform liver function tests (gamma-glutamyltransferase) and evaluate the adequacy of magnesium (often depressed/deficient in IR). IR is NOT diabetes (yet). Opinions vary but about 1 in 4 IR people go on to become diabetic (Lukaczer 1999). One of the best measures for IR may be fasting and two-hour post-prandial serum insulin values following a 75g glucose challenge. Elevations above 15mcIU/mL (fasting) and/or 50mcIU/mL (postprandial) indicate increased insulin levels secondary to insulin resistance (Bland 2000). Some sources view levels above 5mcIU/mL to be cause for concern.  You might not want to mention that you heard it from a knitting chicken on the internet. ;-p

If you are IR, or if you have an underlying hormone imbalance... Or an alien symbient lol... then your whole diet is like a plateau, unless you make a few small tweaks. Don't worry. If you do receive an IR diagnosis, we can still diet with the best of them once you control the hormone-insulin-cortisol cycle which is not difficult and not brutal. I am happy to help you with that.

    Best wishes. Xx
