Spin Class

I normally run but decided to do a spin class today. I thought I had always heard that spinning burns more calories than running...but that just was not the case for me. I simply could not get my heart rate up to the same level (when I run, I keep it between 171 and 185; spin class got to 171 a couple of times, but never sustained and was generally in the 150s). My legs were worn out completely after the workout, so I know I worked as hard as I could (tried running a mile to make up the calorie 'deficit' I had in my hand, but I physically could not make my legs do it). Am I the only one who can't get the same cardio from spinning? Was there something I should have been doing but wasn't?
