Is Michael Phelps reign over???

I know its just one race, but he doesn't look as prepared for these olympics. I dont think he has the same drive he has had in the past, while other swimmers are a lot more motivated, they want his crown.

Are you referring to the heat he was in? Yeah, I was surprised too, but I just wonder if he's holding back a little now on purpose and then shoot forward in the finals.

Though if you're referring to a final that I haven't watched yet, then I'd probably agree with you that his head just isn't in it anymore.

I totally agree with you on this. He doesn't look like he's in great shape and he just didn't appear to have the drive he has had in years past. Maybe it's time for Mike to take a hike. My Mom would kick my butt if she knew I said said. She loved him!!!! LOL

he didnt even medal. so yeah his reign as being dominant is over. he'll probably add a medal or two more though.

Two things to remember: he planned on retiring after Beijing and lost a lot of motivation. Beating Lochte is why he came back. And he just started training 9 months ago. SO he is vastly unprepared compared to some of the others. He might be Michael Phelps but he is not the God-like figure people make him out to be. He is not infallible, clearly.

He trained 9 months for the most grueling event in swimming. It's cocky and ridiculous. It's preposterous and I was rooting against him even though I am a huge team USA fan and a former swimmer. He didn't deserve it whatsoever. Lochte, on the other hand, has repeatedly said that he has been consumed with winning gold and doing well in London since Beijing was over. He would have had the WR if he would have had anyone close to him to push him.

He did an interview that said he only has been training faithfully for the games for 9 months. I don't know why he thought he would win by only training for 9 months. The other USA swimmer that one the gold medal tonight has been training for 4 years. So as much I like Michael Phelps I have to say his reign is over. GO USA!!!

Its tough when you completely DOMINATE a sport, because you eventually get bored. While the other swimmers that you dominated for so long work 100x harder than you, because they want to be the swimmer that beat Michael Phelps

I know it's easy to label Michael Phelps as foolish/cocky/etc. for coming back only after 9 months training, but I saw the 60 Minutes interview he did. He's not back to prove how awesome he is...he's back to try and prove to himself that he can bounce back. He REALLY hit rock bottom after Beijing. And I'm sure his ADHD has not helped matters. He hasn't been in love with this sport for awhile, but he has every right to come back and give it a go even after 9 months. I don't think he begrudges Lochte either or anything. It's the media that's really building up the rivalry, imo. If anyone has proof otherwise that I've missed, please share :)

I think I heard reported that he wasn't planning on participating in this event until about 9 months ago, so he didn't train as long as he normally does. They also said he wasn't feeling very well this morning, so to come in 4th while not feeling well is pretty good in my book.

I'm trying to become a Lochte fan, but it's hard to see Phelps struggle. I hope he gets the three medals he needs to become the most decorated Olympian of all time. That would be fun to watch!

I completely agree, I think the media is really hyping the rivalry between him and Lochte. I dont think Phelps really wants to compete, I think he competed because of the pressure that was put on him. He already proved that if he wants to dominate he can, but Lochte on the other hand still has something to prove.

  • Lets think about this before we rake the guy over the coals. He is in his what, his 3rd Olympics?! Most people are on here for a reason. Anyone think its easy to maintain the weight you finally get to? Know this about Phelps: most people would train 6 days a week for, lets just say, an entire year. Phelps changed his training (not this year) to go 7 days a week. Thats 52 more workouts than the next person. Thats how he got so awesome. Obviously, he hasnt been doing that or his body just isnt reacting the way it used to. Wow, that REALLY happens?!?! How bout we just cheer him on and all the US athletes?

Actually it's his 4th Olympics! They said he has not failed to medal in any event since 2000. He made the team in 2000, but didn't earn any medals that year.
