What are your thoughts?!

I started the group "eat more 2 weigh less" back in May (May 21st to be exact) I was always doubting that advice because I've always been told to eat less and exercise more. So after GAINING 14lbs I decided to ask my friend for advice. She has a friend who is a personal trainer so I asked her about the whole "eat more 2 weigh less" stand point and she said if you gain more than 2-5lbs then it's def. not working for you!! Like I said I've gained 14lbs back so I'm squashing that idea all together. I'm going back to what I did before hand (averaging 1,400-1,600) and going back to my normal exercise. Time to get back to where i was!!
She also said that it is VERY IMPORTANT to listen to your body. (That was another question I had on weather to eat even if I wasn't hungry) She said if you are drinking enough water then there is no need to eat if you aren't hungry! Even with the exercise calories, she said to only eat them back if you feel hungry afterwards.
What are your thoughts on this?

Eat more to weigh less only works if your eating is not achieving nutritional needs. If you are meeting your nutritional needs, then there is NO reason to eat more.
People who say it didn't work for them typically ARE meeting their nutritional needs. So, eating more has zero effect on them.
For other people, such as myself, I was not meeting my needs for years. I actually ate under my BMR for close to 7 years. All while gaining 2, 3, and sometimes 4 pounds a year.
Think of it this way: Cells get damaged doing every day things. The body needs supplies (protein is very important here) and energy to repair them. If you do not have the protein to repair, it won't spend the energy to do so. Why would it? So, You can actually reduce your calories a lot, sacrificing needed protein. But the loss of the protein makes it where the body spends less on repairing cells. So, the calorie "deficit" you made, can be cancelled out all together, or even turned into a surplus.
It IS calories in vs calories out, but surprisingly, some of the things that go IN can determine how much goes out!0
