FOOD!

Hey guys, I've really been struggling lately. Every day I pre-track my food for the day, but I have a problem with believing the numbers MFP gives me... I think it's because I know it has been wrong for a few foods in the past. I worry so much about what I eat, and worry about hidden calories. Today I felt a binge coming on, and I had a sandwich with a packet of crisps and stopped myself there, I've tried to tell myself that this is a normal lunch for some people, and as I didn't have anything but grapes for lunch, I tried to tell myself it wasn't a 'binge'. But I can't help feeling bad, and ashamed.

Another of my worries is FRUIT AND VEG. I go over in sugar nearly every day, because I eat a lot of veg and a couple of fruits a day. The bright red number at the end of each day glares at me, I need confirmation that going over in sugar due to fruit and veg is not bad? and that it will not hinder weight loss?

As you can tell, this is my millionth attempt at achieving my weight loss goal, and so I'm being extra strict and cautious.

PLEASE VIEW MY FOOD DIARY and give me some thoughts in general for the last week?

THANKS GUYS!! :):)

I took a quick look at your food diary and I notice that you are consistently coming in well below your calorie goal for the day. You are starving yourself and have to start eating more. It's not that you can't lose weight at your calorie level, but you won't be able to maintain it when you get to maintainence. I usually come in a bit below my 1200 calories myself and am working on eating more. Especially on the days when I exercise (which is almost every day. I may not eat my exercise calories back always, but I really need to increase my daily intake.

My nutritionist even thinks that because I'm so active I should be eating more than 1200 calories a day. I know it's hard to get out of the mode of feeiing like you have to starve to lose weight, but it's important to learn that lesson. I sympathize with you, but give it a try.

You defenitely need to eat more.
I deal with the same issues. Right now I have decided to stop counting calories and make not bingeing (and not eating when I am not hungry) my main focus. I obsess about food constantly and go from deciding to stop calorie counting, then start counting again and restricting, not allowing sugar except natural sugars, and yesterday I contemplated cutting out ALL sugar. I have a weakness for sugar.
Just try to eat more...you are starving yourself.

One - if you feel ashamed about eating - go talk to a professional - you are starving yourself and have definite ED like behaviour..
Two - there are almost NO protein in your diet - forget about the sugar from fruit and veg, and be a lot more worried about the GREEN number in the protein column....
Eat more, lift heavy things and you wil see the difference...Please start reading about nutriton or go talk to a nutritionist - your thoughts about food scares me....

Well the thing is, because my sugar intake is over most days because of fruits, veg etc, I feel as if I can't eat more to up my calories because it will also up my sugar intake. I don't want my sugar intake to be any worse than it already is. I've even had to limit tomatoes in a salad because they have quite a bit of sugar in them.

Also, I rarely exercise and so part of me believes that I do not need to eat them extra calories anyway. Because I work 9am until 7pm, I get home completely knackered and am soon ready for bed by 10pm.

Also, why do you say my views on food scares you? My mindset is one of a determined dieter

No my dear - a detemined dieter does not feel "ashamed" after eating perfectly good food in limited quatities - not if they didn't steal it from a baby, anyways.
A determined dieter will not obsess over healthy sugars in fruit and vegetables...Your body needs it -carbs and sugar from fruit and veggies are not evil>>>>
A determined dieter will make sure they eat enough to nourish their bodies, not abuse it by starving and living on 700 cal a day....
    Good luck on your journey.....

Its the ADDED sugar you need to worry about, not naturally occuring sugar from fruits and vegetables. You need to be eating at least 1200 a day to fuel your body.

I didn't feel ashamed about the fact that I ate 'perfectly good food in a limited quantity,' I felt ashamed that I ate something which I craved, when I wasn't exactly hungry. Also, my views are not at all ED related. If they were, I can't imagine I would be struggling with being, in fact, OVERweight. I appreciate your comment though.

Hmm...I am struggling with an eating disorder and I am overweight. Gotta love stereotyping.

Sorry, I didn't mean to stereotype. My point was, simply, if I has any ED tendancies which involved undereating then I would not be the size I am.

Thank you Kathyms13, we are indeed all different. Despite a recommendation of 1200, circumstances will change this

Eat all your alloted calories. Make healthy choices most of the time. don't worry about the odd slip up. Change your settings so you don't see the sugar numbers. Fruit sugars do not register in your body the same way processed sugars do. Don't drink beverages with calories in them, they don't help you feel full. MFP is the only site I have ever seen that registers sugar. If you get most of your food from healthy sources you won't have to worry about it. :flowerforyou: Cheers! Grammacanada.

My advice would be pretty simple: Get yourself a healthy goal calorie wise that always meets your bodies basic needs, and stick to it. Give yourself nutrient goals (positive ones, like a certain number grams of protein, which your body needs) and stick with it. And remember that it is what you do on AVERAGE that ends up showing up as who we are. 2 weeks of restriction that prompts 2 weeks eating WAY too much would ultimately, likely, cause weight gain. Not exactly what we are looking for. I guess that is why slow and sure is better than crash and burn :) My daily goal is 1600. I try not to drop below 1400 on low days and over 1800 if I have a horribly hungry day. If I have a hungry day, I try to balance it with lower 1400-1500 days. So, at the end of the week I am around my goal averaged out. Hope that makes sense :D It does inside my head lol

I wouldn't worry about sugar grams that you get from WHOLE fruits and vegetables, as they are natural, and I personally am of the belief that unless you are literally only eating mostly fruit, your body knows what to do with them, they are natural and easily processed by the body. (more veggies than fruits for balance too, but still)

    Hello,
I agree with others that you are not consuming enough calories, protein or water. No woman should ever consume less than 1000 cal's a day. You only have one body, treat it like you love it. Give your body what it needs: delicious fruits and vegetables, proteins and healthy carbs. Protein are necessary for all bodily function, maintanence and repair. You need sugars found in foods for energy. Carbohydrates are your bodies natural and favorite source of fuel. Aim for healthy weightloss 1 to 2 lbs a week. Remember sometimes the journey is just as important as the destination. Reevaluate your goals and see if what you want is truly what you need. Best of luck to you.

You're not doing yourself any good at 500-800 calories a day. Your protein intake is woefully inadequate - your body needs protein to help preserve lean body mass (muscles, connective tissue, bones, etc.). One day you only took in 4 grams of protein. If you're aiming for healthy, sustainable weight loss, you're going at it entirely wrong IMO. I'm no doctor or psychiatrist so I won't pronounce an ED diagnosis - but I'll opine that what you're doing is certainly unhealthy.

If you want to be "strict and cautious" about your weight loss, raise your caloric intake to a level that will adequately fuel your body and adjust your macronutrients (carbs/fat/protein) to healthy levels. There's absolutely nothing wrong with fruits and vegetables, but you're excluding a lot of other things that are equally healthy and essential.
