HIIT is High Intensity Interval Training.
It doesn't have to be running - it can be any kind of workout - running, swimming, burpees, squats, pushups, whatever - as long as you're going as hard as you can and getting your heart rate up to max effort. Typically, you go 20 seconds hard, 10 seconds rest for 10 mintues or so.
For some good examples, check out bodyrock.tv. They post video workouts showing the different exercises. Typically, they do 50 seconds hard, 10 seconds rest and their workouts are around 12 minutes long. They often also post modifications for people who can't do the full movements yet - knee or incline pushups, half burpees, etc.

HIIT = High Intensity Interval Training
I am currently doing TurboFire, TF classes include Fire Drills, also known as High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).These drills push you to your max for up to 1-minute bursts, with quick recovery periods. Studies show that HIIT ignites your metabolism, enabling your body to burn more calories for up to 48 hours after your workout.0
