Iron needs?

I am eating a whole foods, plant based diet and have been since March 11th of this year. In that time, I have lost 71 pounds and feel fabulous. MFP shows my iron needs to be somewhere around 80 mg a day. I have done some online research and everything else I have seen indicates that for someone my age I should need around 18 mg a day. Why is is showing so much higher on MFP? That is the one nurtient that I am almost always under on, everything else looks great.
