Go to a local bike store.
off road - mountain
mostly paved, some dirt paths - hybrid or cyclocross (cyclo being the more 'serious' bike)
road only - road bike0 -
I went for a hybrid so it is good for both road and light trails/grass. Not sure what stores you have in the US but I went to a local chain shop and they gave me good advice.
Depending on budget you could look around for a 2nd hand bargain, I'd say make sure it has at least 18 gears, 21 even better and find out what size bike you need so you dont buy something too big or too small - something I didnt have a clue about but if you google it you should get an idea based on your height - of course you could go into a local store and do some investigation and still buy 2nd hand or from elsewher when you know what you need.
Good luck I'm loving my cycling only started last year and I've now signed up for a 57mile bike ride which is in 4 weeks time eek!!0
