So I would really like to start taking a multivitamin. I already take a Calcium supplement as I'm on the Depo birth control shot and my doctor says it's necessary and I recently started taking a B12 vitamin (haven't done my research on that, my mom bought it and never used it so there's a whole bottle in the drawer, but it says it's good for a healthy nervous system, which seems like it's a good thing). Just curious what the rest of you MFP-ers are taking as I'm a newbie to these and could use some input!

I take calcium(with Vit D and magnesium), fish oil, flax seed oil and a prenatal(not pregnant). My doctor said it has all the stuff you need and it makes sense!

Prenatal, really? Hmmm... I'll do my research on these, thanks!

The most recent recommendations from the Institute of Medicine states that multivitamin use should only be for documented need, not preventive. This is based on data and a paper published on results from the Iowa Women's Health Study. It was found that multivitamin use as preventive medicine has no benefits and in older women a increased mortality rate was found. This of course is quite controversial, but it calls into question the need for a multivitamin if your diet is balanced. I'm telling women to take a multivitamin if they have documented low nutrients or if their diet has glaring holes that they can't/won't fix with food choices. I like the Flintstones Complete Chewables. When I take a vitamin I actually like it :)
