Targetting fatty areas - what's the truth?

Ok, so I hear it all the time on MFP - "You can't lose fat in one area, it happens all over!"
So what's up with Dr. Oz having a nationally televised show and a reputation that's just as big, going on TV and telling us what to eat to burn fat away in target areas of your body?! i.e. Eat this to get rid of arm fat, eat this to get rid of butt fat, eat this to get rid of belly fat.... And so on...

IS he a real Doctor? He sounds like a salesman! Are his claims credible? And is the pure green coffee bean extract capsule really going to help me lose 10% of my body weight and 16% of my body fat?!

Yup, Dr. Oz is a salesman. My boyfriend, who is a doctor, cringes every times someone even mentions Dr. Oz.

they say that DR oz is a real doctor. im sure alot of what he talks about is not what he went to school for so i doubt its all truth. I would stick with the certain exercises to get rid of certain fat in certain areas. :)

I call Dr. Oz the Woo Meister because he woos you into believing the most incredible things. I think he takes things that have a smidgen of truth to it, then boost it up to be some miracle cure, especially for weight loss and aging.

Let's face it, weight loss is hard work. It takes a long time. Few people have the patience and dedication to stick with it the old fashioned way. Same thing with get rich quick schemes. Few people want to do the hard work, so in comes the woo meisters!

Some of his segments that are medical in nature are interesting, and you may learn something, but when he starts with the snake oil and voodoo I'm over it.

Yup. He's a real doctor. He's a cardiologist in NY. And no, put away the magic beans lol.

I think Dr. Oz is a real doctor but I believe he is paid to endorse certain products on his show. I take everything he says on his show with a grain of salt.

My nickname for him is "Dr. Fraud". My personal opinion is that he's a physician who has sold out for the big money and become a snake oil salesman. A very wealthy, famous and popular one, but a snake oil salesman nonetheless. He's a creation of the Oprah machine, and without Oprah he would probably still be just another unknown physician practicing medicine in New York.

As for the OP, the truth is that you can't spot reduce no matter what exercises you do or what magic potion/pill you take. Eat at a caloric deficit with adequate protein intake and use a workout regimen focused on fat loss and the fat will eventually drop off those areas. Nothing you can eat, take or do will influence where it comes off first - that's basically up to genetics. You can do sit-ups (or whatever) until your abs explode, but if you've got a layer of fat around your gut all you're going to have is a nice, firm set of abs under the fat.
