My friend tried to kill herself.

She's in the hospital and okay physically as far as I can tell.

    I am so, so sorry. I am speechless. From someone who can understand both sides, just be a friend and listen. Hopefully your friend will be alright.

    My brother in law hung himself back in 90. All over the shame of gambling away all the money he earned and probably couldn't face his wife.
    The good news is that people who attempt to kill themselves and fail, don't have a high rate of re attempt.

    Well chances are she'll be put on suicide watch for around 6 days and will probably see a psychiatrist or therapist in the meantime, meaning she would be offered the chance to get herself help.

    It's hard to understand people who think about doing it much less try, but right now all you can do is support your friend and let them know they are loved in this world. Don't pass judgment on them, I wouldn't even ask why unless they prompt it first. It's a delicate subject and they're obviously in a fragile state.

    Take it from someone who's tried, who loves someone who's tried, and knows others who have too.
