Hi all,
About 4 weeks in to totally changing my diet using this awesome site and the app!
On the daily summary - I seem to be keeping low on my fat / sat fat / salt percentages etcs and slowly boosting up my fibre, vit c and protein percentage.
However one thing that does go 20 - 30% over is my sugar... I dont have sugar on cereal and I drink green tea, so no sugar there.. it seems to all come from my fruit intake which i have increased.
Any tips on keeping the sugar down or if its as bad as processed sugar?
I dont want to cut fruit out as it has other benefits but i also want my sugar levels low as sugar does turn to dirty fats!!!!
Cheers guys n gals!!

Theres tons of different opinions on sugar from fruit. IMO fructose is just as important to your body as other "healthy" nutrients. I say eat as much fruit as you want as long as your fitting it into your carb macros0

this ^^^ I have heard that MFP sets the sugar goal abnormally low. Personally, I hid the sugar tracker and instead choose to track fiber.0 -
As a counter view I treat fruit as a dessert.
Berries best and then the rest ...
But hey, nobody got fat eating apples or bananas ...0 -
Natural sugars from fruit and a little milk has not hurt my weight loss. I lost 35 pounds in 6 months before getting pregnant. Now that I'm ready to get back into weight loss I'm cutting out refined sugar as best I can, but I don't worry too much about the fruits I eat. I do try to eat more vegetables than fruits, but that's the extent of my concern.0
-
I don't let the sugar I get from fruit bother me! I just watch my sugar intake from other food! Plus I hid it so I don't have to worry about it!!0

^ That right there.0 -
The dietician I saw said the sugar from fruit and other natural things like milk is okay. It's the ADDED white sugar we have to be concerned about. MFP doesn't seem to be able to distinguish between the two. But either way limiting sugar is realllllly hard.0
-
I stick to berries...sugar is sugar. Someone won't agree with me on this, but to each his own...0

The body uses, and breaks down, more efficiently, the sugars from fruit, better than the refined sugars we would add to our diets. If my sugars are over due to fruit, I ignore it. Besides the benefits of fiber and nutrients from fruit , far outweigh the natural sugar intake.0

Wow, just wow. Fructose is by far the worst sugar you can consume. The stuff forms AGE's in your arteries which are basically strands that clog them up. When someone of good health dies from something like a heart attack when they get older this is typically the reason. All sugars create them, but fructose is the worst at it. To put fructose anywhere near healthy is just plain foolish.0 -
Sugar from fruit is fine, and you should only be worried about it if you are DIABETIC.0
-
I don't worry about the sugars in fruits either. Some have more "sugar" than others (pineapples, mangos, bananas) so I don't eat as much of those as I do my berries.0
-
I don't put too much into the sugars on here because I go over a lot with my fruits. I do however, limit my ADDED sugars to what the sugar goal is. So if my fruit sugars put me over, I am not stressing. If you're a diabetic or borderline, then maybe you should worry about it. But if you're not, apples will not make you fat unless you're going way over board with your calories and everything else. At least that's my opinion.0
-
Unless you are diabetic, don't worry about sugars in foods that are also providing vitamins, fiber, protein, etc. I go over on my sugar every day, but it hasn't hampered my progress.0
-
Don't cut out fruit, stop tracking sugar. Next.0

Good article. I just did a Google search to find any articles on fruit causing heart attacks, and I only found science saying that fresh fruit can help avoid heart attacks.
I did find an article suggesting that selling fruit in China can be dangerous: http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/07/27/us-china-unrest-idUSTRE76Q0XW20110727 :laugh:0 -
Cheers guys... Sugar hidden and fruit stays where it is!! Will start eating more berries instead of other fruits... altho I have found a new love for mango!
Just like to say also... only my first post on here and first time reading others... just like to say that there seems to be a really supportive bunch on here and i salute everyone for any weight they have lost / gained etc
Thanks again

This cheers me up. Every day since I've started tracking my food in January, I've been fretting because my sugars are over. Every day! When I look at it from this perspective, I'm not going to worry as much. I'm always under my carb goals and I'm doing well at limited processed sugars and carbs, so WOOHOO!0 -

The only folks who should worry too much about sugar from whole fruits are those males (or female equivalents) trying to go from say 9% body fat to 6-7% (which isn't any more healthy overall).0

^^^^I totally agree with this. As long as you're getting your sugar from fruit and other healthy foods, don't worry about it0 -
This is exactly what my best friend, a holistic chiropractor and 'clean eater,' said about the intake of fruit. Our bodies love the fiber, vitamins and water content of the fruit.0

Sugar is an important source of energy. Research suggests that when you eat whole fruit, there are chemicals that tell your body what to do with the sugar, so it has less impact on your blood sugar than if you ate candy. And, you can't beat the vitamins and phyto-chemicals in there. So, as long as you don't indulge too often in sweets and stay within your calories, I think that being over your sugars from eating fruit is perfectly fine.
(I don't have a link or anything to the research, it was something in Parent's magazine, talking about childhood nutrition and why to serve your kids fruit instead of sugary treats; they quoted a nutritionist who said the above.)0 -
I once read an article where a scientist said: "Show me a person that got diabetes from eating too many strawberries and I'll eat my hat."0

Variety is the spice of life. You're missing out on 100s of other fruits.0 -

Actually, it's the added fructose in HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, etc that is bad. Otherwise, all fruits and veggies would be on the no-no list. Fructose is simply fruit sugar. When they force more onto the corn syrup, it throws everything out of whack and all bets are off.0
