I know that there was a thread about this somewhere, but I couldn't find it.
I just wanted to share that I just adopted two Degus! They are the cutest little things. Degus are closely related to chinchillas and guinea pigs. They look like giant gerbils at first glance, but then you see their face looks squirrelish. They are so cute, I was so excited that I had to share.

Thanks! I would always rather adopt an animal than get them from a pet store / breeder. My horse and degus are all adopted.0

I agree. Rescues are the way to go.

That's awesome! We adopted our 3 dogs from different shelters/ rescues and we got our cat because our neighbor moved and let him go. Outside. :noway: We foster dogs for a local rescue so it's always good to see/ hear of people rescuing. :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: Thanks for helping the cause.0

Congrats on the new family members.0

Congrats! Do you have pictures?0

Yeah! Here they are!
This is Chip & Dale: Chip is the one closer to the camera.
Chip is a curious goo, so he kept jumping on the lens and as soon as it would move, run away. Dale just stayed in the back staring at me.
Here is a closer up picture of Dale:
The white in their eyes is from cataracts. The person who originally owned them gave them sweets - probably not realizing that Degus are diabetic and too many sweets can cause cataracts and other health problems.0 -

That's really sad. I'm so glad there are people like you to adopt animals that some people would turn up their nose at.
My mother in law adopted two 3-legged cats.0 -

Yeah, they are all still living breathing things and deserve a caring home. I know any cats I adopt in the future will be from shelters. I will also try to pick older cats, knowing that they are the ones who really need to be adopted since kittens go so quickly.0 -

Yes! My husband and I adopted a kitty that they think was about 2-3 years old. She's wonderful! She turned out to be pregnant...she had 6 kittens and we gave 3 away. My mother-in-law was supposed to take one but we got attached, which left us with 4 cats! :noway: Then...we went to buy litter at the vet's office and there were rescue kitties from the floods that were a couple of cities away, there was one orange kitty that was left that didn't have a home, so we ended up with him too. He's the love of my life! :smooched:0 -
We've rescued two Guinea Pigs: One from a day care closing it's doors and one from the local Animal Shelter. I was really surprised what good pets rodents are. We also have a rabbit who is house trained. If I had known what wonderful pets rodents are I would have gotten them a long time ago.
Our dogs respect them and it's really funny to see a 100 lb dog and a 4 lb rabbit sleeping together.
The pictures are great.0 -
Aw! Do you have a picture of the rabbit and dog together? That is too cute!0
-
Well, it sounds like the bunny needs to come in and get his picture take with the dog. lol. I will try to get that done this weekend. I'm thinking I need to bring Peter in for the winter anyway. He is 9-10 years old.0
