Question to the cyclists- butt sore

So, I have a new Ladies Schwinn bicyle-. I have only ridden it twice at this point. The seat makes my behind sore. it's not the muscle soreness kind, it's the kind that results from the seat feeling very hard. Also my hubby put the bike together and he's got the seat angling upwards (not flat, as I think it should be). Does anyone have suggestions on how I can lessen the pain from the hard seat and/or how it is positioned?
I am in no way a cyclist, I just got the bicycle for leisure and to help me get in a few cal burns, doing something I thought would be different and fun.

Adjust the seat so it feels a bit better, but other than that all you can do is ride more. Your butt will get used to it and the soreness will go away with time/miles.0

Get a pair of cycling shorts with padding!
Also consider changing the seat for a ladies padded one.
SOOO much better.0 -

I was going to suggest this! You can buy more comfortable seats.0 -
You can buy a seat cover that has a silicone gel pad layer in it (I call it a cushie-tushie, don't know it's actual name though). That helps a lot...still get a little sore but nothing close to the hard seat soreness.0

You can get a pad to put on your seat, but mostly you just have to adjust to it. After a while you won't feel it anymore.......0

REI sells women's padded briefs. Whenever I go bike riding or spinning, I wear them over my underwear and under my pants. They really work. I think they are around 20 or 25 dollars.0

Exactly. I just started biking seriously about a month ago, and the bike shorts are a lifesaver!!0 -
I have bicycle shorts with padding in the crotch. Walking around feels like you're wearing a massive maxi-pad, but they sure work! I don't get that sore feeling after riding anymore.0

I suggest good quality cycling shorts. I'm also guessing that the seat is a large one which actually does not help with comfort. I would say get a slightly narrower seat and stay away from the seat covers. They slide around and actually end up causing more pain and chaffing. The seat should be level. The only other advice is to keep riding. Eventually your butt will toughen up.0

A few thoughts\/options:
* Seat position: absolutely should be flat, or even sliiightly angled down, for the ladies. Try a few different positions and see how it works.
* Seat itself: I'm personally not a fan, but many ladies like those big cushy gel seats. There are also ladies-specific saddles (seats) that you can get, which did work for me.
* Clothing: padded biking shorts make a big difference for me.
* Riding style: as a former mountain biker, I found positioning to make a big difference. Ex: when going over bumpy areas, try to stand up just an inch or so - you almost pinch the seat between your inner thighs.
* Just keep going. Your butt will get used to it.So, I have a new Ladies Schwinn bicyle-. I have only ridden it twice at this point. I had this issue when i first to my bike. Got mine used and the seat was a pro-rider seat...not much to it. I had to go to Meijer (or your local wal-mart type store) and get a new one...think i paid 6-10 bucks for mine. OMG has it helped.0

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I was under the impression that only serious hard core bikers/ cyclists needed bike shorts. I'm just doing it for fun and adding a little variety to my exercise. However, having said all that, I'm not really feeling this sore butt thing, so will need to invest in some new gear and take your suggestions.0

Totally agree with all of the above posters - get a new seat and a pair of padded bike shorts. My bum thanks me and yours will too - trust me!0
