I am very lactose intolerant and soy intolerant as well. What is the best alternative and what brand? I have read of pea powder, egg white powder, hemp powder but I'm not sure which would be best as far as protein goes. I am not extremely picky about taste but if it did taste good that would be a bonus. While we are at it, what are some protein rich foods other than meat and dairy?

  • Almond milk. Lactose-free and soy-free, plus great protein! I drink the unsweetened Almond Fresh brand, it's delicious.

I think she wants an actual protein shake though, not just the milk part. I did read about plant based protein shakes the other day and was going to look into it. I'm going to have to google, but did just come across this http://www.sunwarrior.com

I use Garden of Life's Raw Protein which is vegan.

I think it's soy-free. It can be a little chalky so you have blend it really well. Taste-wise - it really depends what you blend it with. I like it especially since Whole Foods had it on sale for $18!

my housdemate tried a vegan protein, was pea protein. The mint chocolate was lovely, the strawberry wasn't but I can't remember the brand. Was surprised how high the protein content was though!
  • There are a LOT of different kinds of vegan protein out there; hemp, plant-based, grain- based, etc. and some of them taste pretty bad. On the other hand, some of them taste really good.

In my experience, to get the entire low down on which ones are good you should go to a vegan third party review site and pick out a high rated one. My favorite site to do this is http://veganproteinpowders.net. Those top rated ones taste really good with shakes! I would suggest an investment in a magic bullet/blender as well, they are pretty cheap. Vegan shakes taste the best with fruits like berries and bananas. Hope that helped!
  • Thanks for all the wonderful input everybody! I appreciate the websites and personal faves too :) I may have to check out that mint chocolate pea powder just cuz I'm a fan of mint chocolate but I'd also like to check those other vegan protein sites too. I do use almond milk in other things at home and like it a lot. In the past year I've all of a sudden experienced tons of lactose and soy intolerance. While it kinda sucks because I used to eat and drink lots of dairy and soy products, I think it's actually a blessing in disguise for me. thanks again!

I use Nutiva Hemp Protein Powder. I get the variety that has no added sugars. It doesn't taste like much of anything at all. I use it every single day.

Sun Warrior raw vegan Warrior blend might be a good fit for you. It's a little gritty, but the ingredient list is clean.
  • I love Juice Plus Complete with almond milk. Sometimes I add a banana or peanut butter to make it taste like dessert! Not gritty or chalky at all.

Are you wanting more of a protein shake or a meal replacement shake? I know it says protein but I wanted to clarify lol :)

MRM Veggie protein powder is my absolute favorite. It's vegan and also soy-free, a combination of other plant proteins. Comes in chocolate and vanilla. I prefer the chocolate but the vanilla is okay, too. 23 grams of protein per scoop. Also has omega-3 fatty acids! I get it at Super Supplements for the best price, but I've also seen it at whole foods.

If it's not milk or soy, the one I'm most familiar with is egg.

It's a very solid protein source.

Trader Joe's vanilla hemp protein 2 tablesppons, and 3/4 cup berry frozen mix (blueberry, rasberry, blackberry), 1 cup water. Yummy!
  • Pure egg white protein is the most bioavailable and cleanest from all the looking I've done. And, it's just got one ingredient on the label.
