Running & Bagels

So I use to run in high school, and have recently started getting back into my long distance running routines.

I know after a long run its important to fuel your body with carbohydrates to combat exhaustion, and I wonder if the occasional bagel would be considered healthy.

....and we're talking a whole wheat or multi grain bagel here with MAYBE a small smear of light cream cheese w/ some eggwhites & fruit on the side (for a meal example).

Thoughts??

Actually you are supposed to eat carbs before and carbs with a little protein after. It helps rebuild your muscles better than carbs alone.

Bagels are almost a must-have after every race. I don't eat them often just because they have a lot of cals and carb for not much fiber, but if you're running a lot, then good carbs are a good choice. But yes, if you do eat them then for the whole grain kind.

I prefer a banana pre-run, and then post-run I go for oatmeal and protein powder (good carb AND protein). It's what works for me!!

    Happy running!

I like bananas pre-exercise too. Supposedly chocolate milk is the perfect post-exercise food, but I'm lactose intolerant. I usually have cheese sticks. Or sometimes a protein bar if I need something quick and convenient. If I'm going for a sandwich, I have PB & (no sugar added) J on whole wheat mini-bagels. I can't eat a whole bagel, but I can do 1-2 of the minis.
