Not all calories are equal... Well they are... But what else is in there. example: if I eat a bowl of cereal (like special k) with almond milk... And if your like me actually 2 bowls then it is Comming in around 300 or less calories about 10 surgar 5 fat Not too shabby and heck ya I had 2 bowls and feel really good. Plus it is very good and they have like 5 flavors. But if I eat half a donut at about 250-300 calories and honestly there are donuts at well into 500-800 calories out there. But a 300 calories donut comes in at 13 sugar 15 fat and 7 sat fat!
You see the difference... I do!!!! I ate 2 heaping bowls of tasty cereal and came in way lower in fat sugar and no saturated fat while the donut and that's one small donut came in at 13 sugar 15 fat and 7 sat fat! Difference isnt the calorie count its all the crap that comes with it. When your trying to lose weight a calorie is not equal. Not at all...
I'm actually surprised in the miss information on this... I'm not perfect and I dooooo splurge we all do but we should know a bag of carrots is much different than some chips... Really.

If there was a donut with that much more fat than sugar, it would fill me up a whole lot more than that cereal with mostly sugar (carbs are sugar unless fiber, and I doubt cereal had much fiber)and little fat and protein to it. That almond milk is almost flavored water.
If you drink 8 oz of water with that donut, I'd be filled and have less of a blood sugar drop than eating that carb loaded cereal, which would make me hungry in 2 hrs.

Neither is is good as a smaller bagel with peanut butter on it though for good filling protein and fat combo.

A calorie is a basic unit of measurement of energy. 1 calorie of chocolate=1 calorie of fruit. So yes, a calorie is a calorie.

Different foods trigger your body's insulin response differently. A calorie is a calorie, but if you overload on carbs and sugar, your metabolism is going to get messed up by crazy fluctuations in insulin. I'm not saying go low carb or anything, but if you limit your processed carbs and eat less sugar you will most likely make better progress on top of being less hungry. Look into low glycemic index foods. :)

Also, I weigh myself every day and keep a running average so that the occasional fluctuations from water weight doesn't seem like the end of the world. I use the True Weight app for iPhone. I'm sure there are similar things available as well.

You've been given some great suggestions! I also think eating every 4 hours or so is good. I try to eat breakfast, a snack a few hours later, then lunch, then an afternoon snack, then dinner, then an evening snack.. My snacks are usually no more than 200 calories each. My meals are typically between 300 and 600 calories each.

I'm beginning to think it's must be a trick question.

Like we call it a calorie, but it is actually a Kilocalorie. Otherwise we be admitting to eating 300000 calorie donut, and that just doesn't look good. I guess it's good we aren't talking kilojoules.

A calorie is a calorie.. eating clean will keep you from retaining water but in the grand scheme of things you aren't going to get fatter just because you ate 500 calories worth of pastries instead of say, fruit. Not saying you did, just an example.

I think your "extra weight" is water :) I personally don't have the cleanest diet either so I have days where I weigh a bit more than usual and am bloated.. then the next day I look thinner and lo and behold have lost 3-4 lbs.. it's ridiculous :p

A calorie is not a calorie. 3500 calories weighs 1 lb. True. So create a 3500 calorie deficit and lose 1 lb true. Eat a bunch of crap, continue to look and feel like crap. Carbs drive insulin and insulin drives fat. You eat 500 calories in pastries..that's creating fat. In the grand scheme of things you are not going to gain weight.. but your not gonna get less "fatter" either.

But maybe you want to be squishy? I dunno ;)

    Water consumption stinks.

Have you taken a dump in a few days?

Eat a fig and drink some black coffee and call me in the morning!

I took another look at your food diary and you are eating way to many calories. Try to stay within your goal for at least 5 days and see what happens.

    Good Luck! :flowerforyou:

ARE YOU SERIOUS?? Pastry compared to FRUIT?? Natural sugars compared to not natural? Going over and not eating right a number of days will have you gain weight especially if you arent working out in any way and youre not drinking water to flush toxins.... But a calorie is not just a calorie. I eat alot of fruits and veggies and youre telling me thats the same as somone who eats a Whopper?? LOL.. be serious.

My calorie limit was set so I can lose 1 1/2 pounds a week. Even if I went over 400-500 calories, wouldn't I be losing a pound or maintaining at the least? That's the point of this question.
However after reading all of these comments I realized that I was consuming a lot of sodium, which could definitely hold onto water weight and I might even have PCOS. So many possibilities.
    Thanks!

Your meals are all quite big, also, on the days you are exercising usually mfp is very generous with calories burnt so try not to eat them all back.

You're also eating next to no vegetables. (2 cups of shredded lettuce does not the daily recommended 5 serves of vegies make)

There was this study recently where a professor set to out to prove that a calorie was a calorie. He ate nothing but junk and still managed to lose weight. The key was he stayed within his calorie goal, which is why he was able to lose weight. I bet it was really hard to stay under the calorie goal while eating nothing but junk because it's just not very filling. Now, if you don't have the pressure to complete a grand experiment the way he did, my theory is most people couldn't have done it.

I don't believe you need to eat cleancleanclean all the time. But you do need to move more to a 90/10 plan - 90% of the time I'm going to eat healthier foods, and 10% I'll have Taco Bell or Krispie Kreme. Basically, it's the way naturally thin people seem to eat all the time without thinking about it even. The rest of us have to retrain our brains, bodies and palates.

Start small. Are there smarter options at Taco Bell? Or, better yet, can you start making your own version at home? I have tacos, pizza, steak, and the aforementioned ice cream, it's just different than it used to be because I make it myself or found a healthier version of what I really liked, and I'm careful on the portions.

this other than I'll have Taco Bell or Krispie Kreme.
    eat garbage, look like garbage.

I ended up gaining 1.5lbs in 9 days.
My diary log is open, so anybody please give me advice.

    Much appreciated.

Weight can fluctuate 1.5 lbs in a couple of days or even a DAY.

Purely in terms of weight loss, yes. There's a reason the law of thermodynamics isn't called the "suggestion" of thermodynamics. If we're talking in the bigger picture, taking overall health and well-being into consideration, then no - a calorie isn't just a calorie. A balanced, sensible diet will yield better results in that sense than a diet of junk food.

As an aside, a hypothetical diet consisting mostly of fruits and vegetables isn't balanced and healthy either - protein is an essential macronutrient and it may be difficult to take in sufficient amounts unless one is carefully targeting their intake.

With all due respect the insulin hypothesis has been debunked. How would you explain that protein also spikes insulin if what you are suggesting would be true?

Sugar is sugar whether from fruit or any other source. Your body doesn't say, "oh, fruit sugar! I won't convert that into glucose cause it came from fruit!" Obviously fruit has additional fiber and micro nutrients but the sugar cause the same physiological result.

Pure cane sugar, from Hawaii, (from Hawaii), ..... forgot rest of the song.

Of course, not cane sugar anymore, but corn sugar. With added fructose to match the composition closer of ..... cane sugar.

Is it because the other sugars are process that they aren't natural?

What about bread, grains are pretty processed?

Fruits and vegetables, true, much more natural .... sugar.
