Hi there! I eat an entirely plant-based, whole foods diet. That means no processed foods or typical refined sugar. If I do add sweetener it is generally honey or agave, but I try to steer clear of that when possible. I do, however, eat a "lot" (1-3 pieces/day) of fruit (usually strawberries, blueberries, bananas, peaches, oranges, pineapple, mango, and the like).

Somehow, this diet puts me over my sugar limit every single day. I don't get it.

Is there a distinction between natural sugars and those that are more processed, health-wise? If not, should I cut out some of the wonderful, fiber-filled fruit?

I should also add that I'm training for a marathon, so perhaps the extra sugar as carbs is a good thing. But I'd like to hear your thoughts as I'm newish to this whole world of nutrition!

Processed sugars will tend to be contained in a food that doesn't contain nearly as many nutrients. Fruit is nutrient dense and has fiber along with it.

Given that you are in a caloric deficit you will be burning it all off regardless.

I personally wouldnt look at the sugar unless I were eating junk food all the time...that is when it is bad...the sugar in fruit is what you need.

We all tend to ignore the sugar number on here because it is unrealistically low, but what is the right number? What is the percentage of your calorie intake that can be sugar?
