Dieting vs. Exercise in the NYTimes

I tried the calculator at the bottom and it gave me a really different goal and time frame then most other sites. I liked it a lot because of the slow and steadiness of it. Plus, with the graph it was easy to see where I'd be when which is nice. What do you think? Are we being misled by the idea of exercising it away? You can't out exercise a bad diet, but should that even be the focus? Should exercise be pushed as something to maintain a slimmer figure and not as the way to gain it in the first place?
