I really like mine, it is the Polar FT1. I bought one before that was a "no-name" one and it quit working after 1 day.
I say, spend the money for a Polar. They're great.

Anything from Polar, Suunto or Garmin will be good. Just find the one with the features you want for the price you want.

Same question, but also would you suggest chest strap or the wrist/watch type?

Chest strap... DEFINITELY a chest strap. Much more accurate.

I have the Polar FT4. It's a basic HRM. All I want it for is to keep track of my heart rate and burned calories.

After so much research I ended up spending over $200 on a polar heart rate monitor, ended up bringing it back because it would work, seemed to just have a faulty one otherwise they seem to be good, in the end I brought one line and it does all that I want it to. http://www.heartratemonitorpro.com.au

    Good luck.

Oo, how apt. I want one for the hubby to buy for my birthday. I'd been looking at a Polar so its good to see the recommendations on here for it. Not a bad price either at £60 odd. Cheers all.
