Having been phased in and except for a few exceptions for bulk foods and similar products...

Couple clips

...packaged foods must clearly list allergens using common names, like "milk" instead of "hydrolyzed casein," by Saturday.

The rules will require a listing of allergens in smaller components of the product. For example, if a product includes "spices," the label must list any allergens, glutens or sulphites contained in the spices.

Under the new regulations, packaged food companies have the option of either putting an allergen in the list of ingredients or adding a line with the word "contains X."

Yay for "plain language" names, now if they could do something about all the items that have "non offensive ingredient" then dextrose, lactose, sucrose etc which are all ways of saying sugar and if treated as one ingredient would move sugar to be the main ingredient on some of these items.

I like your suggestion of combining ingredients that are essentially the same thing. I don't know why food labeling has to be so complicated.
