How much is too much?

Hey all! I actually enjoy exercising. I usually break mine into 2 sessions. One in the morning before work and one after work. I could be a little obsessed..... maybe. BUT, I actually enjoy it, and I reached my goal weight a couple of months ago now. I've gotten a lot of flack about how much I work out, from friends and family. I work full time and still take care of a home and family, so it's not like it's "interfering" with my daily life! I eat, I don't eat my exercise calories back, ever. But, it's not like I'm underweight, I believe I'm healthy.

Too much is more than you can handle and continually changes as you get more fit. If you are recovering from the workouts and not overtraining then its not too much.

I'm probably the wrong person to ask though because I generally work out 2 or 3 times every day.

Around 5 years ago I got a little crazy. I didnt eat a jelly bean cause it was 30 calories I didnt need..I realized that it was getting alittle too much when I went to the gym on thanksgiving night and I was the only person there. I was surprised it was even open.

I've found the only people criticizing me at the moment (I exercise daily and sometimes twice a day) are those that could stand to do the same.

sometimes when you make positive changes in your own life people react negatively because they feel guilty or jealous or whatever.

Do what works for you and keeps your life in balance :)

Congrats on hitting your goal weight too :D

I'd say as long as you aren't feeling bad effects physically, from over training, you are probably fine. I workout twice a day as well.

Thanks guys! I work out 2 1/2 -3 hours total. Usually 7 days a week, every once in awhile I may miss a day. But, I think I've missed 3 days since January. I'm starting to do more weights now, so far so good!

3 hours a day, 7 days a week is excessive....unless you're training for a marathon or the olympics. If, like you said, family and friends are starting to notice, it could be you're sacrificing relationships and family time for gym time. It's not about if you can still keep up with the housework (like you said you do it your original post).. but are you able to still have quality time with your loved ones? Life is short, and it's hard to find the balance to fit everything in. But if you have to ask "how much is too much" you probably already know the answer.

When fatigue and injuries start appearing (both in body and in relationships) then you know its time to cut down.

    ^^^Well said!
  • Interesting post and comments. I have slowly increased my activity fro 20 minutes 3 times per week to perhaps 60-70 minutes 4 times per weeks over about 6 weeks now. The more I do, the more I want to do. Weight is shifting slowly at around a pound a week and I'm gaining some definition but frustrated that some weeks I don't shift a thing. I'm considering exercising twice per day. Does anyone else do this and how different are the results? I understand Michael Schumacher spends 5 hours a day training!

I agree with this response. Spending time with family is essential. I go to bootcamp at 5:00AM so it does not interfere with my time with my kids. A couple times a week I do take them to the gym, but defnitely not everyday.

Totally agree. As long as you're healthy according to the doctor and have enough time for family, exercise is a hobby like anything else.

My grandparents are in their 70s and are avid triathletes and long-distance runners (Pike's Peak, etc). Almost every hobby they've started since retirement is physical activity of some sort or another. But it makes them happy and keeps them mentally/physically healthy, especially since they do it together. Bottom line: what's "right" to you might not be for someone else, and vice versa.
