When going to the gym DOESN'T count!

Seriously, there a quite a few different groups of men that go to my gym that don't actually do very much exercise.
GOING TO THE GYM DOESN'T COUNT IF YOU JUST STAND THERE TALKING THE WHOLE TIME! POSERS! GET OUT OF MY WAY!
I think it's great to make gyms more social, its nice to walk by someone and say hello to a familiar face/regular, but when you're standing and chatting with 4 or more mates surrounding 1 machine with one person actually working at a time (& this is if they're lucky but this is rare) then going to the gym DOES NOT COUNT. I go to a particularly small gym and the amount of room a couple of different groups of guys (and seriously, there are no women doing this that I have ever seen at MY gym do this only men which is interesting!) take up in the free weights areas is ridiculous. No wonder it can feel intimidating for women to get over into the free weights section to start off with! If you're going to socialise, go outside or at least get out of the way so the rest of us can actually get on with the reason we went there to start with!
Rant over! But seriously, does anyone else have this trouble at their gym? If so, have you done anything about it? What can I do (keeping in mind its a small gym and the same regulars are always there and I don't want people to start talking and referring to me as "Oh that's the cow who did/said...") and is it something you'd tell your gym manager?

I just wait and be patient. But what annoys me is the person talking on there cell phone while walking like a turtle on the treadmill. That doesn't count! It also doesn't count because while I have my I pod on max volume I can still hear her talking. Or the women and men that text while sitting on a machine getting a thumb workout.0

Let's not forget the girl on the elliptical machine wearing a tiny work out outfit, with her makeup and jewelry on, texting away on her cell phone. While she goes at speed one and resistance one for an hr.
Edited to add...i wouldnt care if the gym wasnt packed...but it is so get the hell of the machine and let someone that actually cares use it.0 -
That is SO true amnesobel! I hadn't really thought about 'those' annoying people! Now I think about it, that's very true.
It is just so annoying when you're in your routine and you need the machine/area that they are hovering around or walking super slowly on talking on the phone! It's not fair! I honestly respect everyone's workout regime's, but when their routines affect mine that's when I start to get :mad:0 -
I go to Planet Fitness and they have a Zero Tolerance to talking on cell phones on the gym floor. If you need to talk, the staff asks that you go into the lobby area. If you are caught talking on the gym floor they will first ask to go to the lobby. The second time they "ask" you to leave the gym.
I personally like this policy.0 -
I'm not going to lie lysekb --- I can sometimes be seen with my make up on at the gym --- but these days it's only because I go straight after work! (Am I off the hook now or still one of those girls!?!?! lol) However, when I was less confident and heavier, sometimes I would intentionally put a little bit on to try and make myself look a little bit better and I'd also wear ALL black for obvious reasons! But now that I've lost a bit of weight and I feel sooo much better about myself & I know what I am doing when I go to the gym, I rarely put any make up on and I now wear bright colours!
I always think, even though they're doing stupid things at the gym like wearing a tiny work out outfit, with her makeup and jewelry on, texting away on her cell phone - at least they're there and doing something - with the way countries are looking with their overweight and obesity data, its better that people are exercising --- but for Dukes of Hazzard girl i her make up and tiny clothes on the elliptical... what a waste of an hour! Does it count!? Probably not. lol0 -
I agree that it can get frustrating, but honestly, if it's a gym with paid memberships, they've paid to be there as well and it's their prerogative if they want to do something ineffectual or stand around. Just say excuse me and go past them to get what you need. Maybe they'll take the hint and move over. My fiance and I have started going to the gym at 7 am to beat the after work crowds of people and get on the equipment we need. Just gotta work around it.0

There's a few groups of guys that do this at the mainstream gym I go to. I'm a guy, so if there in my way, I ask them to move. If they say they are using xxx, I laugh and go to the next thing. These guys are all (most) bigger then me, and I have laughed at them a few times.
I'm glad I'm going to a smaller no bs gym now days, and only go to the other for cardio.

It goes on at my gym too. I usually just go work on something else until their done with what I need, but it cane be aggravating. Just 3 or 4 of them standing around one person who is working out, talking.0

mcw1976 - I love that policy! Wish more gyms near me had policies like that!
HannahOM - I totally understand where you're coming from and I honestly do try and work around it, sometimes I'll go later like 8pm rather than between 4-7 when it's peak time, but sometimes that doesn't even work & I can't go in the mornings. I know they're paying the same membership as me and have the right to do what they want there, but I still think people need to be considerate of others participating in the gym appropriately and respect their work out. There is only so much equipment and it's only tiny... there really are other more appropriate places to converse about their lives etc.
Conversely, although they've paid the same money and membership as me to use the gym, if they're not using it appropriately they shouldn't be allowed there (like mcw1976 mentioned with policies - surely are some - I'll have to have a look!) but it could be compared with going to the movies/cinemas. People all pay the same money to see the same movie, but if some people are being inconsiderate or rude by talking and interrupting the movie for other people, then they should be removed or at least spoken to/warned?0 -
I have yet to encounter someone talking on their cell phones while they are in the cardio room. Lately, I have been experiencing people talking as loud as they can to the next person when the machines are in full force...I dont want to hear about someone did that or someone is getting a procedure done at the doctor. That stuff is personal and should wait until the workout is done.0

Oh my goodness ---- I THIS! This is something I can do!
It's hard to no know what to say and do sometimes, because the guys who are doing this at my gym are SO up themselves. They think they're that HOT and the bees knees and gods gifts to women! Instantly I disliked them when I saw them with the vibes and their persona! So that plus getting in my way = annoyed and unhappy me! haha0
