Back pain from exercising? Or something else?

I've been having a lot of back pain on and off for the last 3 weeks. It's not the usual soreness from after working out, it's actual pain like I might have hurt myself.
The thing is I can't figure out what is causing it...
Also I don't want to skip exercising all together, are there certain exercises/machines I should avoid? Is it ok if I do my normal routine if I take a pain reliever?

Your back is tricky. You never want to push because once your back is injured or strained, everything else follows suit. You can do damage to your knees, neck, ankles etc. Your best bet is to take a few days off, alternate heat and ice with massage and be kind to it. If you can't massage, do what I do. Grab a baseball or golf ball and put it between your back and a wall. Move your body to cause the ball to roll and get the kinks out. I've had 2 herniated discs and have issues with my lower back and knees. Trust me when I say that pushing through the pain will get you nowhere. If pain relievers need to be taken longer than say 3 days, you need to go see a Dr. One false move and you could do some serious damage. The second time I hurt myself, I was unloading the dishwasher. It doesn't take much. Feel better soon!0

Sounds like me, my spine is f-ed. Get your checked by a doctor. Once you do that I found that exercising made it worse temporarily, but I kept at it anyway (slow and steady with small pansy 'girl' weights) and once my back strengthened up I found a lot less pain.
I would absolutely not take a pain reliever. You could twist a certain way and injure yourself and not know it until hours later.0 -
a lot of times when my back hurts is usually tight muscles in my legs and bootay pullling on my back. invest in a foam roller. Your body will thank you!0

We don't have nearly enough information from you to give you proper advice. As a general rule, pain is your body asking you to stop. Keep going at your own peril.
Get some rest and avoid activities that strained your back. Stretch your hamstrings and start doing planks. Take Ibuprofen. Use ice. If it doesn't improve over the next few weeks consider seeing a professional.0
