I'm in the military and struggling to get back to a better weight after baby, being diagnosed with PCOS, and two years at an admin job. My husband used to be a Marine and has gained 200 lbs in less than two years...that's right, 200 lbs! We don't eat that well, but I try to work out 5-6x a week to compensate, which isn't really working. I hate struggling with my with my weight every day and walking onto base and into work feeling like a failure because my appearance is "sub-par".
My husband says we'll be starting Atkins on Wednesday, but i don't know if that will really happen. He is very stubborn and won't eat food I cook and the food he cooks is usually full of fat and carbs...it seems like this problem is bigger than either of us can solve ourselves...any advice?
How do I stop letting my husband sabotage my efforts without alienating him? Is that possible?

Atkins, or another low carb plan, may be a good fit for both of you. My husband and I have been eating low carb for about 2 months and have lost 15 lb(me) and 20 some odd lbs(hubby). we both find it easy to identify and avoid carbs, and both enjoy the freedom of adding a little butter to veggies or using salad dressing without worrying about the fat content. The first few days as your body adjusts to doing without frequent carb intake are the hardest, then you'll feel more energy . Also, it's easy to eat out on low carb diet- just eat the meat, salad and veggies and skip the rice or potato.

Hopefully this will work for both of you, but if you feel like he is undermining your efforts you may have to start preparing your own meals and let him prepare his, no matter what plan you're following. Perhaps preparing main dishes that you can both eat, then each choosing your own side dishes would work, Good luck to you.

a 200 # weight gain in that time may shorten your marriage by death doing you part-

I highly suggest a sit down with you 2 and discuss your firm and final plan for getting healthier. Choose whatever plan suits you- whether you come here to count calories- join a group elsewhere or do atkins- but wow- do something soon.

Why do you NEED to eat what he cooks?

Don't wait for him, cook your own healthy food and take care of yourself. Choose how you want to do it and get going, YOUR losing weight has nothing to do with him. Yes, it means there might be fantastic things around the house you can't eat and yes that will make it harder but....... it's not his weight problem, it's yours.

If he wants to go down that road and stay that way....good luck to him....

Sounds to me like he has control issues.

Since you have PCOS (like I do) you might want to talk to your doctor about what sort of diet would be safest and/or most effective for you. PCOS increases risk of heart problems, so I wonder about the high-protein thing. I'm not a doctor, though. If your doctor says it's fine, then give it a try.

My advice would be to start looking after yourself. Start cooking healthy meals and if your husband refuses to eat them, then don't worry about it. As soon as the weight starts dropping off you, I am sure he will think twice about his own life and follow your example. Good luck x

Thanks everyone. Control issues definitely play a part...I think it's caused by insecurity. I was hoping my husband would be a workout /eating healthy partner and support. But I guess I have to do it with or without him. Just need to muster up some awesome will power and self-discipline somehow!
