Does anybody else get up after midnight and eat?

Some nights, I get up and eat. I still log it it. My doctor put me on Metformin and said that should help. She said I was having an insulin spike at night. It worked for about 10 days. I have been super stressed lately and attribut it to that or the sleep meds I'm on (ambien). I'm a mess. :/

it's quite possible that you're not eating enough during the day if you're getting up and eating -- or maybe you are just bored/stressed out -- but you need to find another outlet for that frustration. Exercise really helps me with stress.

I don't do that. I hope you figure out what the stressors are and deal with them. Stress is terrible for the body, and for weight loss - if that is your goal.

Isn't sleep-eating an actual side-effect of Ambien? Wouldn't the solution be to find an alternative?

I have never done that but I didnt want to read and run. So I take it you are suffering from diabetes?? metformin is giving to diabetics isnt it?

I hope your ok and not too stressed!! Ive just spent the best part of a year being stressed on my degree and now having to have a year off because of my back. I found making myself take time out to de-stress by going for a run or just putting relaxing music on my headphones. Its not much but a start. xxxxxxxxxxx

maybe I didn't eat enough the day before, but last night I woke up hungry ...... had a few club crackers & orange marmalade, read a bit & then slept like a log ...... and entered it in as my morning snack ......

I used to have the issue you are talking about. Sometimes it would even be a few times a night !

I discovered this was due to eating larger amounts of carbs in the evening. I believe this caused a large insulin spike and for some reason for some people it causes your body to want more food in the middle of the night and wakes you up.

When I restricted my carbs in the evening (especially sugar) after a couple weeks I was no longer waking up during the night to eat. This has led to a much higher quality of sleep for me.

you get up to eat even while on ambien wow. I used to get up abut 2:45 am and make a PB&J or a handful of grapes or cherries. And that was after going to bed right after dinner, now i wait about 3 hors after eating to go to bed and when i get up now i just drink water and go back to bed. Mind u im up every hour during the night but as soon as morning comes i get my best sleep LOL. I no crazy, not to worried right now since im not working. I have sleep apnea, i was told the reason i wake up so much is because I stop breathing.

Night eating for moi is a huge no no. I will start rationalizing which day I should
log the food on I know myself and i will legal cheat, yeah yeah I know. I will be conflicted
which day I will log the food on. LOL

I get up in the night to take my thyroid, which you cannot have any food with
or the effects of the hormone will be diminished. I drink a HINT water with the thyroxine.

Take your vitamins and drink your water.......might just be thirsty

On sleep eating on Ambien, it is true. However, the people that do that don't really remember until they see the mess in the morning. I don't think that is the case. I am not diabetic but it runs powerfully on both sides of my family Native American side especially. I am "at risk"... The doctor also said it would help with the insulin spikes. I take cinamon caps and eat alot of cayanne pepper on my food (I LOVE IT!) and that is suppose to regulate sugar. I like the idea of not eating too many carbs at night. I will try that. And now that I am out of pain, I can go back to exercising. I was going to start yesterday..and the day before (since I was pain free). Okay...FOR SURE tonight. I have a gym here...and was getting up at 6 a.m. for a work out and then going to work. I did this consistently for 8 plus weeks and lost no weight. As soon as I got on this site, I began to lose weight. I was eating healthy but just too much I guess. The metformin is also suppose to help with weight loss.

poly cystic ovary syndrone (cyst on your ovaries). This will cause a carb a carb intolerance. Metformin was recently discovered to provide a benefit for those who have it. It was also originally a diabetic medicine. My wife is on it to regulate her cycles.

Another thing that may benefit you is heavy weight training. I have seen several studies that suggest weight training can improve jnsulin response. Also eating lean proteins from natural meats (steak, lean lamb, veal, duck, bison).
