A man who tried to dry his underpants and socks in the microwave accidentally set fire to his flat, the fire service have said.

Firefighters were called to the flat on Market Street in Weymouth at about 22:45 BST on Sunday after reports of a fire alarm ringing.

The man was led to safety by other people living in the block of flats.

The fire in the second floor flat was extinguished quickly, a spokesman for Dorset Fire Service said.

    When I was little I made a pretty painting of a fish, with tin foil for scales.. I tried to dry it in the microwave. Set the kitchen on fire. :blushing:

    I heard a similar story about an elderly woman trying to dry off her cat after giving it a bath.

    Supposedly this took place when microwaves first came out though.
