Year Round Schooling...

I always started school after Labor day and Gabriel did last year, but I found out that it was only set up that way last year b/c they were building a new elementary school in the district and they wanted to give themselves extra time to get it done. This year it'll be before Labor Day!
How did the first day go today?0 -
My niece and nephews out in Colorado used to have year round schooling. They actually really liked it. They would have 6 weeks on and 3 weeks off.0

We only get about 2 months of summer vacation here. But we also get three weeks off during the school year. I really wish we had a longer summer break, its over way too quickly!0

Oh, it went great! She's so excited However, the other one kept me up all night sceaming.

My kids went back today. They wouldn't immediately be thrilled with year-round school, but I think they would eventually like it. It means longer breaks in the school year. Personally, I would love it. My electric bill jumped up from $50 to $250 over the summer because my kids were home and running the air all day.0

I grew up with school starting at the end of August and getting out mid may. I didn't realize how nice it was until my kids school started after Labor day and get out in the middle of June. We now take our vacations in the spring and miss school because it's just too dang hot to wait until summer vacation.0

When I was younger, I changed from regular school to year-round school, and I have to say I liked the regular a lot more. Sure, getting 3 weeks off after 6 weeks on was cool, but I had a lot of friends that ended up being on a different 'track' than me (meaning, their 3 weeks off could differ from mine) and when summer came around, my older brothers who were not in year-round school were able to have a fun full summer while I had to go to school. It made family vacations hard to plan.0

Salaries would have to increase dramatically and with the economy what it is today, I'm not sure it will happen anytime soon.
It might be good for the students in the long run, but teachers use the summer months to supplement their incomes. Take that away for 3-week breaks at a time and they won't be able to do that. Then, what do you do about extra-curricular personnel who work through breaks and may not be able to supplement their income or take vacations? Their time will have to be highly rewarded.
If salaries and stipends don't increase, teachers will leave in mass numbers. Then where will that leave education in America? Salaries will increase, I'm sure of it, but then just like our government, where are they going to get the money to provide for all that?
Arghhhh!0 -

Grew up in Oklahoma, school was from mid August to mid May. Here in Wisconsin it is September to mid June. Just different regions. I like the idea of year round school. 6 weeks on and 3 weeks off. I am all for it!0

I have been teaching in a modified year round schedule for about a dozen years. The teachers went back on July 17; the students' first day was July 23. We have two weeks off between each quarter, so that is June, December, and March. We are still out by the end of May. It is a wonderful schedule. Teachers are lined up to work here, not just because of the schedule, but it's a good district anyway. Among other reasons to shorten summer vacation is the well-documented amount of learning loss that occurs during extended vacations, particularly among children living in poverty. As far as teacher salaries, yes, why don't you all agree to pay us more? You have given us your children. Paying crap wages and arranging the schedule so teachers can paint houses in the summer is no way to nurture either teachers or students.
And a note to the parents who take their kids out of school to go on vacation, every time you do that, you are punishing me with a lot of extra work to catch your child up. I can't replicate classroom experiences anyway, so your children really miss out.0 -
Mine go back on the 15th and are in until may 25th. I only WISH we had year round school. Would make it so much easier with daycare/baby sitting in the summer for so many families. Plus, they lose a good chunk of their curriculum from the previous year. They take a month or do to review and get back into the swing of school.0

I grew up in year round school 6 weeks on 3 weeks off, and didn't like it. And as a parent, I don't want it. Once people get used to that I believe the vacations will get shorter and shorter until there are almost no vacations. This was confirmed to me when A very active in public education told me that was the plan. I want to raise my own kids not turn them over to the government to raise.0

That actually sounds like a really good deal.0 -

Many districts in Oklahoma are starting to go to year round school. I think it will be a year or two before all school districts are year round. My girls start Pre-K in 2 weeks and I actually hope that their district goes to year round soon. I think it is ultimately better for the learning environment.0 -

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ WELL SAID!! I could not agree with you more!0 -
At what point is it going to come to that? The first day of school in early August?
ahhh I miss the days that Summer was over after Labor Day.
We homeschool, independently. So our schedule it set that way...we start after Labor Day.
I love a good, long summer!
We do so, so much....homeschool convention, tent camping, swimming, hiking, boating, and on and on...0 -
I don't like the idea of all year school. Kids need a break...after-all they are children. So much of their lives revolve around doing their best an being taught to be so highly competitive all the time that it is nice for them to have some down time and just be a kid! So many kids have no imagination, no idea how to "play" without some sort of gadget in their hands. They need to climb trees, catch bugs and frogs, lie down in the grass and look up at the clouds. As a society we have turned our kids into giant balls of stress constantly go, go, going until they drop to the floor from exhaustion.
Sure, it woud make it easier on parents as far as daycare and bills etc...but is that really why we had kids...so that it would be easy???
These are my kids and I would like to have the chance to spend some quality time with them. It takes me all summer to break all the bad habits they learned at school..the attitude, bad language etc. I barely get it out of them in time to send them back for more.
Don't get me wrong, they learn planty of good things too but I like that my kids have a full summer to go outside and play! Recess and P.E. time are far to short for kids to get all of their energy out.
Granted, I am a stay at home mom and am very, very lucky to be able to be here all summer with my kids. I take that time to supplement their education by doing our own summer curriculum. It is pretty relaxed but it keeps them in the habit of using their brains. Plus they get the opportunity to study things that they choose to learn about which in turn helps them to be excited about what they are doing. It helps spark an interest into new things and it gives my older daughters a chance to help their younger sister. It builds confidence in all of them and teaches them to work together. I don't want to lose that time with them.
I think year round school would only divide families more and more. So many families spend so little time together already and this would encourage less time together. Think about families that are divorced too.....some kids custody arrangement is summer with one parent and school year with the other....if they are out of state this would greatly affect the child seeing one of the parents regularly.
Besides studies show that children lose some of what they leared after extended breaks so how is it that regular 3 week breaks through-out the year are beneficial. Seems to me that they would spend 1-2 weeks reviewing then 4 weeks learning, then they would be off again for 3 weeks and the process would start all over. Sounds like 2 steps forward and one step back all year long. Think aot the last few weeksof the year before summer break do they really do anything??? Not really so how would a 3 week brak every 6 weeks work out...that last week would be a joke because no one would really be interested in starting a new topic or pushing to do their best. It's the same for adults in the working world...we all slack a bit when we know it's almost time to go home. Students and teachers are no different!0 -
my kids got out june 15th and dont go back till august 29th. Last year cause of the hurricane they went in after labor day but that was only because we had no power for a couple weeks.0

i also do my own thing with my kids in the summertime to keep them up to date so they dont forget things but its more relaxed.0 -
In the Uk we start early September, have 6-8 weeks of school, then a week off at half term, then another 6-8 weeks, then 2 weeks at Christmas, then repeat. Half term, Christmas, Half term, Easter, Half term, 6 week long summer from Mid July to September.
It's a good system. Summer isn't too long, but there are lots of shorter breaks that make the term time go quicker.0 -
It would be far too expensive to have kids go to school year round. They would have to up the teachers salaries, IF they could actually convince them to teach year round. Not to mention the fact that the schools would have to be air conditioned. I don't know if they AC new ones that are being built but the older schools definitely do not have AC in them (at least not where I live) and that would be a huge problem in the summer time.
With that said I'm all for kids going to school year round as long as they would actually get an education. Sure the kids are in school for the day but the amount of time that is actually spent on teaching amounts to probably two hours out of the day. My sister-in-law was going to home school her son when they moved to a different town. After one day he begged his mother to let him go back to regular school because he actually had to sit there and be taught. He broke his day down for her and it literally came out to about two hours of actual teaching that went on. The rest of the day was filled with breaks and fun time.0 -
I think year-round would be beneficial. Raise the teacher's salaries, that's fine with me. After all, they are educating our next generation, your children. They should at least reach average salaries in the US which is approximately 40K or more. I have no problem with this.
I think it would be useful for children to learn what it's like to work regularly. I'm not just talking about children either. College students should be year-round as well. I might catch flack for saying that, but it'd be way more beneficial for their future. I know that as college grad it was a bit difficult to adjust to working year-round with a few DAYS off here and there. I think students of all ages need to be adjusted to schooling year-round. Yes, there should be breaks in there, but not 3 week breaks. At the max, 2 weeks and that should only be around major holidays like Christmas/New Years, Independence day, Easter....maybe Memorial weekend. This might sound harsh, but I think it'd really help with the quality of our education and possibly even college tuition, since that seems to be skyrocketing in the US.0 -
My father was military, and I experienced both types of schooling in my day, moving around as much as I did. Grades 3-5 were year round. And I've got to say...I MUCH prefer year round. Kids do NOT need months at a time breaks. Year round, you get two weeks at a time. Which is perfect. Kids don't get bored (either being home too long or not having a break from school for too long). They don't forget what they've learned (as much). I HATED going back to 9-month school when we moved to another state.
Year round, FTW!0 -

Year round would actually work well for the situation that's developing in my cray-cray life!0 -
I am SO jealous of those of you who sent your kids off to school!! Here in VA, we go back the day after Labor Day and then don't get out until around the 15th of June. Today is one of those days I would have LOVED to drop them off at school and go get a coffee! lol Few more weeks to go...0
-
My kids go back to school in 2 days and get out just before Memorial Day. I would be all for a year round program. Summers here in Florida are generally hot and humid, so it's hard to get out of the house. A longish break over winter would be ideal.0

Currently America is not even in the top 10 on pretty much any form of education so obviously something is going horribly wrong, I say get that year round cycle into play and let's get back in the competition before we all get left behind0
-
Our kids start the 15th but they also got out May 18th so they had about the same time out that I did growing up and starting after labor day but we never got out till June.0

To qualify this discussion, none of the "year round" systems in the United States change the required number of days of school in a year. Here in Arizona, we still have 180 days of school; we just spread it out a few weeks longer. Those two week breaks between quarters are not too long to cause learning loss but they allow families to vacation in the off season and I can tell you that teacher stress is much lower.
Apparently, some of the posters on this thread don't think much of what we are doing in school or that we aren't really doing much of anything, but I can attest to most of us are working ten hour days designing high-quality, engaging lessons, grading papers, communicating with parents, running student clubs, etc. etc. etc. I am very invested in my students and I definitely see an improvement in my emotional resilience when I get those periodic breaks. As far as a longer period off, the students have 7 weeks off in the summer.
This is the start of my 37th year. I had been hoping to make it 8 more. . . but all the ragging on teachers and school is wearing thin. I don't know if I can hang on that long.0
