I swim laps usually 2x a week for 45 minutes each time. does that cover most of my toning work, since it works all the muscles, or do i still need to really concentrate on weights and strength training? i'm not trying to avoid strength training, i'm just wondering if the swimming takes care of it. Thanks for all your thoughts!

I think swimming is considered more of a cardio exercise. Not sure though. Bump 'cause I would like to know too!

I've always heard that it tones as well as does cardio, but I don't know for sure. I would also like to know. We need a personal trainer in here to ask.

    Sorry I can't answer either.

I always tell people to think it through logically--If you look at any set of guidelines for strength training, the most commonly used are: 1-3 sets, 8-12 reps, work to "failure" (i.e. cannot continue to lift weight with proper form) each set.

Now think of what you are doing in cardio: dozens to hundreds of repetitions per minute, done continuously for 20+ minutes, never reaching failure.

    Now, answer your own question.

All training is specific to the exact conditions imposed on the body. Therefore, a beginner, or someone new to a specific cardio activity will increase their strength levels to the point needed to adapt to that specific activity. Depending on the volume, frequency and intensity, that could conceivable result in the "toning" effects one is looking for. However, you will not see "strength training" effects without strength training.

Keep in mind that your overall appearance will also be affected by levels of body fat.
