There is a book called New Rules of Lifting for Women (also a group on MFP). I'm on stage 1 of the program and i'm loving it so far! It's really easy to follow and it has very detailed instructions for people (like me) who have never lifted before.
Also, if your gym has classes they are a great (fun!) way to get in cardio. I LOVE zumba, body sculpt, dance, & kickboxing.0 -

The books recommended are great, but don't hesitate to ask for help from the people who work there too! If you think you're doing something wrong, its much better to ask than to risk injury!0

WOW!!! These are some great references!!! I am definitely going to check out some of them...
When I started back at the gym, I focused on cardio for the first two weeks, to get my body used to working out...Now, I have started to incorporate weights and all...
I have 36 - 40 lbs to go!!!0 -
Great tips. Bump for review later. Thanks!0

I totally agree with Heidi!! I always ask the staff/trainers for suggestions/guidance, and they are always welcome to give it to me I'd rather ask them, then risk injury...The books recommended are great, but don't hesitate to ask for help from the people who work there too! One of my inspirations and I believe the best exercise plans for achieveing maximum cardio and strength in one hit.
http://www.functionalpatterns.com/method/planes-of-motion/ - 100's of videos but is he for beginners, probably not. Recommend the Pendulum Swing Row Squat on cable machine.
For learning the basics online, yes to Scooby and Scott Herman but some not so well known ones who are up to date with modern valuable training techniques rather than snake oil.

Get a trainer to show you the BIG LIFTS
Military Press
squat
Deadlift
Chest Press - once you got correct form on these the world is your oyster. It's only pushing and pulling.0 -
I know trainers can be pricey, but it's worth doing at least one session to set you up with a starting routine. All of the other resources everyone else mentioned are fantastic, but when you're just beginning and doing it on your own, you can't be sure your form is correct, and that's really important so you can get the best workout possible and prevent injury. Having a trainer (or someone who really knows their stuff) guiding you through a routine can be super super helpful, and then you can carry on on your own once you have a plan and excellent form.0

Most gyms offer you an intro session with a trainer for free.....they're going to hope you sign up to pay, but you can get a lot of information. Just decline further sessions if you're not wanting to do that.
The cardio equipment at the gym is pretty self-explanatory. Start at a low level, and gradually increase intensity. I prefer the elliptical, but treadmills are good too. Or steppers, Rowing machines are easy to figure out too, and really, if you're confused, I bet there are folks around who would be happy to show you the basics. Have fun!0 -
Here's a great beginner's routine:
http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=4195843
It relies on compound movements, uses very sensible set/rep/weight progression and has deloading built in to avoid overtraining. I've been weight training (on and off) for over 35 years and this is one of the most sensible and well-designed programs I've ever used.0 -
