Anyone here try Capoeira?

I saw a show a few years back where some people were doing Capoeira. It seems like you'd have to be really physically fit to do it, and I'm not sure that I'm there yet, but I want to try it so bad! I am moving to Okinawa in a few months and they have a Capoeira academy there. Has anyone here used it to get in shape while starting out not having a lot of strength? I'm a little worried I'll end up biting off more than I can chew.
So if anyone has done it before and can offer me some pointers or let me know what I'm getting into, that would be great! If it doesn't work out, I could always do the kickboxing class, but this is the first time I'll ever be near a place that offers Capoeira.

I know this post is a few months old, but I've been learning Capoeira for the past couple of months now and I can tell you that I started out with absolutely NOOOO upper body strength, experience or anything of the sort. You just have to be willing to push yourself because it is a very hard art to grasp. Just don't be afraid or feel overwhelmed over it because you get an unbelievable workout, cardio and strength, and you feel great after.0

i havent found a place that has it regularly, but there are sometimes people who play around that green area on lakeshore ave. next to lake merritt. sometimes i've seen people play at an art gallery(! iknow right!) on the corner of 14th and franklin and when i look in their always liek "come in and join us" but i only see them there once every few months and it's not like i walk around with my capoeira gear with me
apparently there's another place in piedmont that practices regularly but i havent checked them out.0 -
Yes! they have many schools that train at lake merritt or just regular rodas. they even have samba by the lake! every first fridays of the month, they might have a street roda too at the oakland art murmur. I used to be a former student on Piedmont. It's mandinga, and they are really awesome but since i live in san jose it's too long of a commute, so now I train at UCA hayward. You should come by, capoeira gear or not!!0
