Pain from walking on treadmill

Recently I've started walking on a treadmill for about 30 minutes. I stretch before and after workouts and never walk on an incline. But still, within five minutes of walking my calf muscles start to cramp up really badly. The pain goes away shortly after I get off the treadmill.
Can anyone tell me what's causing this? Maybe I'm not doing the proper stretching exercises. If anyone can give some suggestions on what exercises to do that would be great.

my guess, bad runners, or bad form ... but I'm thinking it's the shoes? do you warm up and cool down on the treadmill?0

Sounds like the shoes.....I can always start to tell when my running shoes are worn out because my feet and legs start to hurt.0

I think I see your problem--
You have to actually stay ON the treadmill--0 -
It could be shin splits. i don't think i spelled that right. I would try new sneakers. If that doesn't help then talk to a doc. Hope you get better!

Sorry for the double posts0

Try walking at a slight incline, I don't find completely flat comfortable. Nothing wrong with trying the inclines either, just do it at a slower pace.0

My doctor recommended this stretching exercise for me before getting on the treamill. It has worked for me. I no longer have any pain and go up to 60 mins @7.5% grade @ 4 mpjh.
Sit on a bench and put one leg up, flat as possible on the bench. Rotate the ankle to the right as far as possible and hold for 10 seconds. Then rotate the ankle as far as possible to the left and hold for 10 seconds. Then rotate the ankle straight and point the toes and hold for 10 seconds. Then repeat with the other leg.
Hope it works for you. It does for me and I'm 62 years old.0 -

Check these out:
https://www.northcoastfootcare.com/footcare-info/heel-pain-stretching-plantar-fasciitis.html
These are what I recommend with my athletes (I work in sports medicine) and they normally work for helping with calf pain. Do not pay attention to the first half that talks about plantar fasciitis; just look at the calf stretching at the bottom of the page. (Best pictures I could find to show the stretches) You should be warmed up before you stretch and make sure to hold the stretch and not push through any pain. Then also stretch after you are done exercising. If stretching does not help and you are properly hydrated and taking in enough electrolytes then you should contact a doctor if you are having pain.0 -
I am a massage therapist and normally see this sort of thing when
1. the shoes do not support you and are broken down (I normally wear New balance as the arch support is greater than most)
2. you are not stretching correctly. You should be able to hold your stretches for 10 seconds.. If you can hold it longer comfortably then you are not stretching enough. If you can not hold it for 10 seconds you are over stretching and will cause the muscle to spasm.
3. Also are you drinking enough water? I know this site suggests 8 glasses.. but, a more realistic number would be to use the following calculation.
1. Divide your body weight in half.
2. The resulting figure is the amount in fluid ounces you require to maintain minimum levels of
hydration.
3. Drink this amount each day.
4. Drink more if you exercise, if the weather is hot, if you are sick (especially if diarrhea or
vomiting are present), if you take medications daily, if you are nursing or pregnant, if you are
under stress, or anytime you experience significant fluid loss.
*example= 200lb person should drink 100oz of water every day.
The variable here is how much caffeine or alcohol you consume (because they are diuretics)
So, for every ounce of that you consume you need another .5oz of water to counter act the diuretic
effect. (8oz coffee = 4 oz more water)
Yes, I know seems like a lot of water.. but when you stop and think about how much of your body is made up of water 2/3 or roughly 66% it only makes sense.
You could also see a massage therapist to help work out the build up of lactic acid in the muscles. It will help you not only feel better, but to flush the toxins and allow the muscles to heal faster.0 -
