So, what can you tell me about sushi?

I have recently discovered the wonders of sushi. Not by eating it for the first time, no no. But the local sushi restaurant that's a 5 minutes walk away from my home is incredibly affordable. For $10 including a tip I felt full for the rest of the day-- and I had the sushi for a very early dinner. I logged the set of 3 vegetables rolls I had (I got a vegetable roll combo,) and I was surprised at the low number of calories (I also did remember to log the 3 tablespoons of soy sauce I used.) I was thinking, 'wow! It's a combination of healthy (seaweed and vegetables) foods for me, and filler rice that makes me feel full.' For the same amount I would pay for a fast food burger (which I don't anymore,) I can pick up 8 pieces of my favorite avocado rolls.

But I want to know from the MFP community... what can you tell me about the health/weight loss benefits from sushi? What can you tell me about the downfalls? Keeping in mind that what I had was 3 different vegetable rolls, and I don't fancy any of the others that I know have extras such as meat/sauces/etc.

Also, what can you tell me about vegetable tempura? I love vegetable tempura, but figured at the time it was too obviously unhealthy for me, being deep friend vegetables, but a friend pointed out that tempura is different from other deep fried foods and really not that bad. Can you agree? Disagree?

Thanks guys!

  • Sushi: the rolls of rice and filled with fish etc aren't your dream diet food-loaded with cardbs, and because they are "finger food" very easy to over endulge with.
Sashim: the fish alone or even Nigiri sushi( fish over rice) are better ideas

Sushi is great. Traditional japanese food is generally perfectly ballanced. The only thing is that the western style sushi may content mayo or avocado which has a bit more fat than you'd desire but still sushi is perfect :D

I can't help you with tempura but personaly I stay away from deep fried foods as a rule.
