I made some oatmeal I'd gotten at the grocery store, Active Lifestyle Raisin Apple and Walnut...It was delicious. Added some banana to it, it was delightful.

I went to add it to my food diary, and I looked at the nutritional info on the box...and noticed a maggot on it.

Then another, and another.

I freaked out and threw the box in the sink. I dumped it out to see if the individual packets had been 'contaminated'. They didn't seem to be, but I looked in the box and in the corner was a small bunch of maggots and little moth looking things and what I'm guessing was oatmeal. My stomach keps turning as I type this thinking I ate a frigging maggot...I reallllly don't think I did but I feel like they're all over me!

I'm sorry, I really needed to share that. You all need to be as grossed out as I am right now.

Wow... I would so be taking that back and complaining! I thought you were gonna say you'd eaten something that didn't agree with you lol. Because oatmeal made me gag the other day.. mostly because I decided to make it in a mug and didn't stir it up before nuking.. so was getting these NASTY powder like nuggets... makes me want to gag just thinking about it. I'm not a huge oatmeal person and honestly haven't been able to eat another pack yet in fear this will happen again.
  • Wow, that's just disgusting  Reminds me of just a few months back when I had made one of those 100 calorie popcorn bags and then got a biteful that filled my mouth with the taste of MOLD! I couldn't stop throwing up and had planned to complain to the company but never did figuring it wouldn't get me anywhere, lol. But lets just say I will never get that popcorn again, and I doubt you'll ever get that oatmeal again.....FOOD CAN BE SO NASTY SOMETIMES!!!!

I'd bring it back and complain, but I already lost the 'evidence' because when I freaked and threw it in the sink, I immediately turned the water on and drowned most of the grossness.

It just sucks because I really liked that oatmeal, and I'm not a fan of oatmeal!

I got it on like a last minute sale, it was like .89 for the box...maybe that's why it was .89!!

At least I've lost my appetite.

I just emailed the company (Krogers) and told them what happened. I mentioned that I am there at least 3-4 times a week and I expect to get a reply with what they are going to do about this. My stomach is still churning over the thought of that. I gagged and nearly threw up a few times.

Now I know to fully inspect anything I get there before I eat it!
  • urgh! yuckiness!!! sorry you had to experience that!
  • I hope Krogers or FM doesn't want to give you more oatmeal . . . . YIKES !!

I HATE OATMEAL AND NOW I HAVE ANOTHER EXCUSE NOT TO EAT IT !!!!

Blah.....not that this will help you feel better, but I take EVERYTHING out of the cardboard packing that it comes in when I'm putting away groceries.....like you could take the packets of oatmeal out and keep them in a basket. The flies get in the corners and lay eggs since all this food is sitting in some storage faciltiy for who knows how long. Even cans that are wrapped in threes in cardboard...I take all them out and throw the cardboard away immediately. They can also be in the little corners of plastic bags from the grocery store! And on another note, you should wash all food cans and soda cans before opening them because there are also rats in those storage facilities. Sorry, I probably just grossed you out more.

It is a very good thing I have an iron stomach (definitely not the same as abs of steel  ). I happened to be finish my oatmeal as I read your post. Nothing takes my appetite away - which I guess is a big reason I'm on this site in the first place.

I am very sorry you had that very tramatic experience. :flowerforyou:
  • its ok..you just got more protien than you thought you would.....hey, is it protein enriched?!?!...LOL!

JK....it is really gross but I just wanted you to get a little laugh out of it....

Wow. that's all i can say..Wow. Makes me not want to eat anything that i did not grow myself! I guess that would be a good thing.....I never thought of stuff like that happening to food while in the storage facility...will def be more careful from now on.
And I don't think I will be able to eat oatmeal for a looong time now.....

I bought some yogurt from Safeway - the little portion size ones - and every one of them was moldy, even though the best before date was still a week away. I took it back and got my money back no problem, even though I didn't have the receipt any more. Some stores value their customers and won't make a fuss over a few bucks. Good luck - they should be giving you your money back plus a big fat apology!

Please be sure to email the manufacturer (or call them) and give them the box/lot number. They need to know.

Ewwwwwwwwwww, that gave me goose bumps while reading your post.

I know it is not you, and not most of us.............The problem with boxed foods are they sit on warehouse shelfs for God knows how long and then eventually get shipped to a store. Breeding grounds for a whole lot of natures creatures that are icky to breed in the boxes.

Steel cut oats in the bulk bin at the Coop is what I buy. I bag them myself.

Toots, I hate to say this but you need to do a thorough check of the rest of your panty. The fact that you found a moth makes me think you have flour moths (or pantry moths). I have actually had an infestation of these nasty little things before. It can get out of hand quick!! It isn't uncommon for them to be in boxes of grains like this and then spread to other things in your pantry. Check your sugar, flour, any other kind of grains you have. You need to make sure there is no larva left or moths left in your pantry AT ALL!!! We emptied our entire pantry. Anything that didn't look infested and we wanted to keep, we froze just in case. We threw away all our flour and sugar.

I am going to get rid of the stuff anyway...I'm not taking any chances. I have those in a separate cabinet, but still. I do have some items in tupperware containers, so they should be safe, right?

Yeah, that was one of the suggestions given to me when I had this problem. They can get into and thrive in the cardboard boxes, but they can't get to stuff in tupperware like that as long as it is sealed. Good luck!! I will spare you the horror story mine was. We didn't notice there was a problem until we had moths. Hopefully you caught this quickly enough that you won't have any more problems. :flowerforyou:
