muscle development

SO do you think your muscles will develop differently depending on the type of exercise you do? for example if you run all the time will your leg muscles look differently than if you lifted weights all the time or danced for exercise?

Muscles can get bigger or smaller, that's about it. Obviously this will change the shape somewhat as a result. Raising or lowering body fat will change the look of the visible muscle by covering up or revealing muscle definition, respectively.

Different types of exercises will work muscles in slightly different ways and thus could produce different muscle growth. Like doing incline bench to target upper pecs slightly more vs flat bench or decline bench.

Having said that, doing things like running or dancing generally don't develop muscles. They get conditioned for the work you're doing of course but the only real difference is going be dropping body fat to reveal the existing muscle.

you *could* get those quads another way I guess, but I think it would be difficult...

    Oooooh my god...

    /backs away from bike

    That's pretty gross.

For the OP, absolutely different exercises develop muscles differently. I run, my boyfriend bikes, and when we do the opposite with one another we always complain about discovering new and suddenly achy muscles. :)

Gross? Seriously? It's rude when someone says gross to your chicken legs or muffin top but it's okay to say gross to an athlete's muscles?

    That's sad.

And what DopeItUp said. Muscles don't get elongated, it's about muscle mass and body fat.

You seem to be suggesting that the only way they train their legs is by bike riding.

Don't even get me started on the drugs...

I am not suggesting that at all, what I am simply saying is that different sports or exercises result in different muscle development (drugs or no drugs). In this context I think we're talking about a broad definition of 'muscle development'. Obviously an individual muscle grows the way an individual muscle grows. But different sports will result in the over-development of some muscles in comparison, resulting in an overall appearance of that is typical of that sport. I think its pretty ludicrous to suggest the opposite.

Also I don't think these legs are gross at all.

Nah. Bodybuilder legs would be more evenly developed and aesthetic than those. Even Tom Platz, who had some of the most freakish legs in the BB world, looked better than that:

  • German Track Sprint Cyclists, not disimilar to other Track Sprint Cyclists and a track sprint cyclists training methods are so little to do with riding a bike it is unreal, like Usain Bolt spending all his time running, does not happen.

Sprint Cyclists only concern is KW/h

So, muscle development is sport or activity specific or choice to look a certain way.
