Running Shoes

So I will start running soon. I just need the OK from my physical therapist and I am good to go. I've always had severe knee pain while running and so I always opted not to do it. Well, turns out that I am the FBI Special Agent hiring process and one aspect of their fitness test is running. So I got to do this! No more excuses.

Just wondering what are some good running shoes out there that offer a lot of support for the knees. I will be wearing these insoles they gave me too.

Also, any tips would be much appreciated.

You may want to go to a running store where they watch you run and determine what kind of shoes you need based on that. Not every shoe out there is good for everyone. I have been sticking with Asics with the "duroplex??" cushion at the bottom. You probably don't want to get a neutral running shoe. Hope this helps

I agree, go to your local running store and have them help you!
  • Definately get measured, video taped and fitted for the right shoe. I started the C25K program 3 times and stopped due to shin splints. I have completed it once and I am now doing it a second time to increase my speed, all since I got fitted for shoes in spring of 09. No shin splints. It was worth the extra money.

Since you already have inserts, Ask your therapist what your foot type is, for example, flat, normal, high arch and if they can tell you how you pronate. Pronation is one of the bigger aspects of how your foot feels after running, walking etc. Once you know this you can go to any shoe site and they all have charts of shoes that fit different types of feet. I did this and made myself a list of shoes from each company and then I went to shoe stores and tried on several shoes from each brand and found ones I liked the best.

To answer your main question, good brands are asics, mizuno, brooks, nike and new balance and adidas has a few good ones coming out. My favorites are asics, they fit my feet well and my inserts fit perfect inside. It really comes down to how you respond to the shoes and vice versa.

    good luck! It's addictive

My initial ortho doc gave me insoles for pes planus aka flat feet. II have a condition called Patellofemoral syndrome. My knees are naturally angled outward and that is why certain exercises like running cause me severe pain in my knees. The muscles on the outer part of the knees are way stronger and pull outward so they are working on aligning everything correctly in my physical therapy sessions. Since I've been doing these sessions, I've been feeling really good. I still have to avoid running for now but once the sessions are done, I should be all set. I already feel less pain when I work out that would've hurt a ton before. I am loving the kinesio tape they put on me each session

Right now I have Asics Cross Trainers for my normal gym stuff and they feel good. I'll have to check out a local shoe store and get things figured out.
