Metabolic Rate

Hi! I went to the Wellness Center today to get a Metabolic Rate and Fitness test.... She told me I am not eating enough calories at 1200. She recommend I eat ~1750 a day, regardless of how much exercise I do and I should see the weight fall off. Call me crazy, but this seems strange to me. Just venting....... :)

Sounds reasonable to me. Most people on MFP are eating too few calories to lose weight in a healthy way. I eat 1600 every day and I am still losing. I have a lot left to lose, too. Good luck.
  • Thanks for the reassurance! I guess I will see what happens if I up them!

Hi there - actually I'd listen to her. Your body has a Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) which is the amount of calories it needs to work even if you were lying in a coma state. It doesn't take into account the energy you need for being up and about. If you go below this your body will go into a type of starvation mode and not burn energy but store it because it doesn't know when it's going to get enough fuel again. As a result, you barely lose anything or hit a very long and sustained platau. change your settings to make your daily goal the number she gave you and give yourself a month and see how it goes. and enjoy being able to eat a little more :-) Good luck.
  • How can the rate be tracked? as my trainer has told me to eat more as well??

Yarwell -- My Resting Metabolic Rate is 1710 cals a day. She said + my lifestyle I need about 2269 Cals a day -501 (for weightloss) = 1768 to consume +/-..... For my fitness test I did the whole breathy mask while running to 85% heart rate and I scored 47.4 with >46.8 being superior... it's how well your heart works when you exercises (dummied down version for me). My BMI and BF% stink, but I think with added strength training those will improve. She said I do too much cardio and my body is holding on to the fat.. Waaa I love cardio

How can you do too much cardio?

What does MFP say your calories burned from normal daily activities is? (HOME>Goals>DIET PROFILE)

Cool, thanks. I got 27.4 which is poor. It does decline with age, but apparently 91% of people are fitter than me :-)
