Excessive hobbies?

Does anyone else have too many hobbies?
I have a terrible problem with going through phases of hobbies, plough loads of money into it only to get bored of it a few months down the line.
One minute it is baking...then crocheting....then nail art. Why can I never just find one thing I like and stick at it?

I have too many hobbies in the sense of finding time to do them. Writing at first was a hobby, but once I became published became more of a job. It comes first. Playing guitar, riding my motorcycle fall right behind it. Just need to find more than a hobby. It's hard for me to call them hobbies, they're passions.

I would argue that this is a good thing. Having many hobbies when you are young will help mold you into a cultured adult. You'll be able to speak to many experiences and participate with at least an apprentice's knowledge in many more places in your life.

In the meantime, start a Pinterest account so you can organize all of the hobby projects you want to try and keep a photo album to remind you of how you progressed.

I agree with ket. I think that having a wide array of interests will make you a more well-rounded person. It's good to have multiple things to do, at least you'll never get bored!
  • Oh yes. I have way to many and just like you I plow tons of money into it only to get bored with it after awhile. I have more scrapbooking stuff than the law allows. I haven't scrapped in years! Doesn't mean I won't start again but..... Then I started knitting. The only thing I have learned how to do is scarfs I have tons!

I love pinterest too; so many awesome things to see, do, visit.

As for hobbies, I understand. I have a bit of a spending issue when it comes to craft - in particular. But, I also love buying toys (for the kids, I say. Husband always asks if it is for me or for the kids, haha).

I have done art classes. Bought all the things I needed for that - two terms of it;; then didn't want to go anymore.

Started wing chun classes a few months ago. Really enjoy it when I am there, but feel like I want to give that up.

I'm a photographer so there are lot of things to invest in on this hobby (erm, job) alone. Actually, once I started getting money for it (over 3 years ago) the love for it dwindled. Shame. Think I want to go back to IT and keep the photography for my self and family.

I love buying things for my "hobbies" so I guess shopping is a hobby too.

Would love to learn violin ... but at 35 I may have missed the boat on that one (people keep telling me).

Love a hobby or two, or more. :)

I have a habit of getting very, very enthusiastic about one particular hobby and completely immersing myself in it for a few years and boring everyone around me about it. On the plus side, I learn a hell of a lot, meet some interesting people and have great experiences along the way.

As you can imagine, I'm currently boring everyone talking about fitness and weight loss which is timed well with the Olympics... when people talk about stuff I like to show off with a couple of gymnastics moves eg pike holds.

Maybe in 3 years time, I'll be aiming for champion pasty eater.

I have had various crafty type hobbies, but I always come back to sewing- I'd be lost without my sewing machine! I use it almost every day!
I started sewing when I was about 8 so been doing if for 39 years!

I wish I had one hobby I was completely passionate about and could always dive into. But I don't so I bounce around a lot between different things, but have gotten much better about spending until I have spent a decent amount of time into something. (Just ignore all the photography equipment I just bought about 2 months ago)

Yeah, it's not entirely wasted - enjoyment and improvement in various ways.

Re your violin learning, I don't see why you can't learn. Just find a teacher and have a go!

I go through phases with my interests as well. I've learned to start new things in moderation. For example, I've included bike riding as part of trying to become healthy. There's lots of wonderful new bikes out there with gel padded seats, disc brakes, shock absorbing suspension. But before I go out and spending several hundred dollars on a new bike I have to prove to myself (and my wife) that I'm truly committed to doing this and its not just a passing fancy. So I got a decent bike at a garage sale for under $50 and then had the local bike shop give it the once-over. If I stick with it for 3 - 6 months I'll reward myself with an upgrade to a better bike.

I also like model building but I've gotten away from it because work is very busy. My car hobby turned into a career and business for me for about 13 years. Tip: when you take your love of a hobby and turn it into a business you will suck all the joy out of it. I sold the business in 2003. I didn't have the desire to work on my own hobby cars for almost 2 years. Now I'm getting back into it. I'm restoring an old classic 1936 Ford pickup truck. Even on that project I will work evenings and weekends for several weeks in a row and then maybe not touch it for a few months.
