I am a biologist and am trying to think about this without thinking about the scientific side so much, but for those f you who use sweeteners, particularly ones with Aspartame/Saccharin/Sucralose/phenylalanine as a key ingredient, how does it affect how you feel? I know the science behind it etc however I am wondering on a person to person case if they feel any short term side effects or suffer and problems from using such sweeteners. I am a coffee lover and cannot take coffee without one teaspoon of sugar or of honey. I am considering using a sweetener for the short term.

Thanks guys!

:) Jessica

I use Splenda quite a bit and it hasn't affected me in any way ( that I can feel) .

I don't have any adverse reactions to any. I drink diet pop somewhat regularly.

I'm also convinced that aspartame is safe due to the chemical makeup and considering the dosage limits at which problems can even begin to occur. (You'd have to try hard to drink enough pop to have issues).
  • Yeah, there is a big divide in opinion about the amounts you have to consume, everything I have read about it and studied does say it is a high amount, but people still get iffy about having it. I think I am going to start using some though, i think the benefits of less white sugar out weighs the paranoia about sugar supplements lol.

I use Truvia for protein shakes, tea, and coffee. I haven't noticed any significant difference, and I like the taste.

I prefer sucralose. I occasionally bake with Splenda, can't say I love it (tastewise) but it's not too dreadful.

Except for controversial studies which got dismissed, there is no health hazard with any substitutes around their EDI, or with sugar alcohols. Except for calories in sugar alcohols that people ignore or the laxative effect.

Artificial sweeteners have never given me grief, although I do prefer Splenda for taste.

IMO, there is absolutely zero risk in enjoying sweeteners in your diet.

I assume you mean sugar substitutes, not supplements? :)

Personally, I can't stand any of the artificial sweeteners. They taste gross.

If I feel like adding something sweet (pretty rare) I go with honey or (real, pure) maple syrup.

I use aspartame based sweetener in my coffee almost every day and and the flavor additive I use in my water (quite a lot) also contains aspartame....and when I feel like a soda I drink diet.

I have not and have never observed any side effects that I could attribute to the sweeterner (I have however at times had side effects I could attribute to too much coffee)
  • I use a LOT of splenda in my oatmeal, coffee, greek yogurt etc on a daily basis and have been doing so for the past 2 years and as you can see on my banner, it hasn't had any effect on my weight loss and I feel fine.

I also want to add that although it is 0 calorie, splenda has about 1 carb per packet and truiva has 2. Although this may not seem like a lot, if you use as much as I do, the carbs can add up quickly

I'm the same way. I tried Stevia thinking it would be different.... it was. Tasted worse than any of them and the taste hung in my mouth for hours. I can tolerate Equal and Splenda if I must but to me they all have a bitter aspirin like aftertaste.

Triggers migraines in my case. Makes me lightheaded and upsets my stomach. I avoid sweeteners like the plague.

I steer clear of Aspartame as I tend to get headaches on it and the whole approval process just doesn't seem right to me (the Sweet Misery documentary on-line is an eye-opener ...).

Coffee and heavy cream is my thing. I was tea and 3 sugars for 40 years, not these days.

(edit) Oh, and I have some stevia-based hot chocolate which is quite nice.
