School Lunches for kids ?

Hey !
School starts here in a week - and my son absolutely HATES the school lunches (he always says the food is overcooked and too "mushy" ... thats what I get for always trying to keep things closest to its natural form at home. he can't STAND mushy veggies lol), so we always pack one from home. He is not too picky - loves veggies and fruits, meats, cheeses, etc.
I was just wondering if anyone had some good "healthy but kids still like it" suggestions. Id like to steer AWAY from lunchables every day and provide him some variety. He doesnt have access to heat anything up, so he pretty much has to take a cold lunch. We bought a little "thermos" but it doesnt keep things warm enough and by lunch time they are luke warm. THIS is the one thing he IS picky about. If it's traditionally a "hot" food - he does NOT like it cold.
I usually send a 100% juice or capri sun drink and a bottle of water. Whatever he doesnt drink at lunch he has right after school.
Anyhow - any suggestions? what do your kids like?
*edited to add - my son is 9 years old if that helps.
